-Stud Moving WIRE WHEEL HUB ---->Fixed!

Post by Professor Fate » Fri Aug 18, 2023 1:54 pm

What's the best way to repair a stud in a front hub for wire wheels that spins after you get it tightened down a bit? Any sneaky tricks???

They were originally swedged on the shoulder below the threads. Re-swedge the loose stud.
Same tool as model a hubs. I recall seeing a video of the job for model A's.

Re-swedging the stud may not be the answer. That process is meant to stop the stud moving in and out. Splines on the stud are supposed to stop it turning, and there is a flat on the head of the stud which engages on a low shoulder in the hub, as an additional stop. If your stud is turning in the hub, the splines are damaged and the shoulder gas been compromised. Time for the suggested weld, but it should be done with the stud under its usual tension, either in the car with the nut run up as usual, or off the car and still run up to tension.

Hope this helps.

What holds the stid is the swedge & the flat on the head that butts to a raised ring of casting.
A weld is an ugly patch. If the stud wont take a reswedge, replace it. They are readily available & cheap. MHO.

Small tack weld on the back side.
I tried to re-swedge the stud.......

Unsuccesful. Had to resort to a tac weld with the stud compressed under tension.

There was another stud that had turned but was still locked in place. That one got a small glob of weld too.

Car is back together.

Thanks to all for teaching me some new T stuff. Much appreciated.
