1927 Engine

Post by GG Gregory » Fri Dec 22, 2023 1:36 pm

I was gifted a complete 27 chassis with Vaporizer carb. Of course I’ll be using a regular Holly carb after I look over the engine. What’s the best way to knock out a hole between the cylinders for the carb rod ?

If you look @ that area you will see a square area made to be punched thru.(its quite thin)
A small cold chisel or large screwdriver will do it. You will also need to replace/modify the valve cover.

Is it possible to use, or modify for use, the vaporizer's linkage to work with an NH? I seem to recall seeing one like that somewhere.

Langs offers such a linkage kit.

Lang's (and probably, Snyders, too) sell a kit that allows conversion from vaporizer to pre-vaporizer carb. Lang's part number is 6299CL, priced at $45.95 in their 2021 catalog. Now it may be a different price, or not available at all. Some owners may not want to spend $45.95 + to buy the kit to avoid punching a hole in a 'virgin' block, but with the scarcity of 'virgin' 27 vaporizer blocks, a "virgin' block may be worth more to someone who really wants and needs it than the kit costs. All things are 'virgin' only once.

I wouldn't punch that hole. I have a lot of late blocks and only one has the hole blockage, and that is the one I am using for my car. It came with a Vaporizer which I will use but, I bought the adapter so that I have options without irreversible compromise.

My '27 is not punched out and I chose to use the conversion kit rather than maul the block when I switched to an NH. Works fine!

If you haven't done it already, please don't 'de-flower' the virgin block, There are plenty of 26-27 blocks that have been, either by Ford, or an unscrupulous owner, out there and someone would likely trade you for one. I would if I were withing driving distance.

I haven’t punched the hole yet. I was given the 27 chassis from my late friends collection. The car had caught fire early in its life and sat for many years before my buddy bought it in the late 1950’s. He swore it was a very low mileage car as bud had planned to build a speedster one day, but it never happened. I plan to open up the engine sometime this winter. Hopefully it is exactly what my buddy had told me. The reason I ask about the knock out is that I plan on using the engine in my 27 Roadster, which has the NH carb.
