Chev valve spring keepers and retainers

Post by Steve King » Mon Feb 26, 2024 11:34 am

I am finishing a late 13 block someone else started. The block has had seats installed, ground and guide reamed to accept what I believe are chev valves that have been included. The valve dimensions are 5.103" long. 1.506" head diameter. .3415" stem diameter. They have 1 notch about. 90" or more wide for the keepers. The slot diameter there is .3003". What keepers, spring retainers, and adjustable lifters would I need to complete the job? Part numbers, source? I tried 6 times turning my camera every way but no success uploading pictures. I've uploaded here before, but not today.

For lifters 3058B, C, D or E, Chaffin's.

Don't get the self-locking style.

The 9N tractor retainers are the best fit with chebby valves and T springs. The chebby valve keepers work with the tractor retainers. I’ll get part numbers tonite if nobody else offers em up before…

Jerry
Have you had problems with the self locking lifters?

I did the T springs, 9-N Ford tractor retainers and Chevy valves and keepers also. It all fits together real good. Also adjustable lifters.

Classic Keepers sells a keeper that moves the retainer up .060 to give a better installed spring height. P/N 1060-100 that number is for 100 pairs
for 11/32 valves. there should be someone that will sell smaller quantities. Model A springs will give a greater spring pressure just in case you
plan on getting more than 3000 rpm out of your T.

I have a dandy little valve spring compressor which make installing caps and collets [keepers] much easier. It is a period piece with jaws which open in PARALLEL, and click open that way when set, leaving both hands free. This means the cap stays central on the valve stem, allowing easy fitment of the two collets. The scissor type valve lifters cock the spring and cap sideways, making installing the collets very difficult at times.

I can post a photo tomorrow if anyone is interested.
