Get your coils and/or timer tested at Chickasha

Post by Larry Azevedo » Tue Mar 05, 2024 12:05 pm

I have developed a benchtop tester which fully simulates the performance of the timer / coil ignition system, including operation on magneto voltage on the Model T. The system can measure the performance of any timer running on battery or magneto at any desired rpm. In addition, the system can drive a set of four coils and the behavior of each coil can be measured and observed on a storage scope. If you bring coil(s) and/or timers I will mount them on the system and you can observe the performance of them on battery or magneto operation for free! See you there! I will be set up in the north building in space NI10.

Larry: This sounds like a significant contribution to the hobby, thanks for sharing.

For those of us not traveling to Chickasha, I respectfully suggest making a video of your testing system available on the Forum, and/or submitting a technical article to Vintage Ford in the near future. (That is, assuming you are willing to share proprietary information about your invention.)
Safe travels, jb

Hi James,
Thanks for the question. I gave a 2.5 hr presentation about my measurement system at the Winter Clinic this year at McPherson College and Bill Howell video taped it. It will be available on UTube in the near future. I'll post a link when it's available.

Well Larry, did you test many coils and did we learn anything from this random sample?

Hi Andy,
I tested about 25 coils for different folks. Some needed adjustment which we did. Only one timer was tested which was a new New Day timer.
