Advice needed on fitting a cam thrust washer kit to a reground cam

Post by Mark Nunn » Mon Apr 22, 2024 8:56 am

I am fitting cam bearings to a reground cam. So far, everything is going well and I’m pleased with progress. My reground cam no longer has a thrust surface full-circle on the front lobe. I could use advice on setting up the fit of a thrust washer kit.

The service manual (para. 481) shows a maximum end play of .004”. Instructions that came with the thrust kit says to set end play to .005”. My new cam bearing has a thrust clearance of .007” between the lobe and shell. Do you think .007” is enough to adjust the thrust kit to .005”? That would leave .002” between the rear of the bearing shell and cam lobe. I am concerned that the lobe could hit the shell as things begin to wear in use. Since there is a notch at the top of the bearing for tappet clearance, the lobe would be banging into the shell. My though is to increase the .007” clearance to .010” and let the thrust kit control end play. What have you done when installing a reground cam?

As long as you're using the thrust kit, it should not hurt to remove some material from the back end of the cam bearing. Taking off .010" would give you plenty of space for future wear in the thrust bearing kit.
