Brass Radiator, Brass Lamp Covers ??

Years ago I bought a set of fairly corduroy type material with softer fabric inside for 1914 brass. Now I need another set and Lang’s only has crummy light weight white cotton 1 layer covers. Snyders and Restoration Supply doesn’t even carry brass component covers. Where could I find the described covers ? I just remembered Chafins, I’ll search their catalog and post a picture of what I’m looking for. Thanks in advance…george

Nope. Chaffins doesn’t sell brass component covers and my wife doesn’t sew. Here’s a picture of the radiator cover I bought probly 20 years ago -

Howdy George! As per the suggestions of several here on the forum, I have made my own covers out of Anti-Tarnish Silver Cloth and had good results. My '11 Touring lives about 100 yards from the edge of Puget Sound so the salty air conditions make for a good test base. I made some bag like patterns out of old T-shirts by draping them over the brass items and securing the open edges with pins. When I was happy with the results, they were transferred to the Anti-Tarnish Fabric, cut, and sewn up. You could even use Fabric Adhesive in a pinch since there's no real stress on the attached areas.

Thanks for the suggestion Sean et al. If I had a more entrepreneurial spirit I’d say theres a quite large product market here - just in the Model T community. Without brass component covers, I take a full time week to prepare a 1914 T runabout for show/tour… and thats black and brass lamps ! So there’s no quality brass covers on the market - be it resolved - and my wife and I don’t sew. I have the patterns and thankfully there’s plenty of hole in the wall seamstresses around here so I’ll have 2 sets made.

George, I sent you an email. Lately I have been repolishing 'polished' brass with Flitz, Semichrome, and Mothers, and while I can make it gleam, it just doesn't seem to stay that way long. This has been very frustrating. I tried putting small plastic trash bags over each piece to protect it, but after a week or two in a climate controlled shop, and then a 8 hour trip inside of an enclosed trailer, when the bag was removed upon arrival, it didn't seem to work out too well as the gleam was not like it was when they were wrapped after polishing.

So is this anti-tarnishing material the secret? Do you think Corduroy exterior is what makes it last??

That looks like a cover my aunt made. I see where you bough a set from us 15 years ago.

They were all made out of a 2 layer polyester/flannel outer layer and a soft cotton inner layer

If you go to any large fabric store, they should be able to give you a good recommendation of someone who can sew exactly what you want.

Brent- try waxing your brass with regular car wax after polishing - it helps! but, covers do slow the tarnishng down.
