Repair/Replacement service for honey comb type radiators

Post by Ron Patterson » Sat Jul 27, 2024 6:11 pm

I have a local friend with a jaw dropping gorgeous 1930 Packard Coupe that he purchased from Sweden.
The car has a honey comb radiator and needs some repair or replacement.
Obviously cost is not an issue, but my question is finding a expert for this kind of work is extremely important.
Does anyone here know of any shop or company where this kind if work is available.
I understand there are shops in England who do this kind of work?
Any leads or information would be greatly appreciated?

This is probably not a option but years ago one of my neighbors had a Auburn with a very distinctive radiator pattern ( I don’t remember what it was, he referred to it as a honeycomb ) after taking it to many shops that all said it was not repairable said they could make a radiator to fit using a modern core. He said that was out of the question because the radiator was a distinctive part of the character of the Auburn & he did not want to change that! The one radiator shop said that was no problem, they made a radiator that fit the car then cut back of the original radiator & installed it over the new radiator. It look perfect from the outside & was hardly noticeable from under the hood and he said it ran much cooler than it ever had.
Brassworks is always a option I probably should have lead with that!
Craig.

I asked this question recently. I got lots of advice, but no one had actually had one recored. I'm going to check out the place in New Zealand.

...but no one had actually had one recored.

I did. I was very pleased with the results. Unfortunately the guy who did mine is no longer with us. I already have a shop in mind if I need another.

Yes, but... cores for a 1930 Packard, as the OP inquired about, are a whole other thing.

My brother still runs a radiator service in Australia, re-coring is just a question of sending the measurements and style of the core to the manufactures that supply them.

Years ago I had a 38 Plymouth. It had that kind of radiator but was covered with a grille so it didn't show unless you raised the hood. About all you can do is possibly solder it in the spot. Very difficult to do so and on a T would show. They cannot even be rodded out. So only boiled out. If you insist on that type radiator, be sure to keep it clean and without sediment or even hard water.

As mentioned above Replicore in New Zealand make cores. Your friend could contact them to see if they know of someone in the US they could recommend.

If he was in Australia I would suggest Lester Thearle in Gunnedah.
