A Garmin Battery Replacement

Post by J1MGOLDEN » Sat Aug 31, 2024 12:35 pm

Does anyone know the secret of replacing a Garmin Battery?

I just found a battery on Amazon for my Garmin.

It came with instructions and everything, even a tool to remove the Torx Screws.

There was also a blank disk with it that I was supposed to insert and follow the directions for a download from someplace.

The disc appears to be blank and was for the wrong Garmin model.

The Torx screwdriver was the wrong size for my screws that hold the Garmin together.

The battery is evidently for a different Garmin!

I have a 2797 Garmin and the battery is for a 2597 Garmin.

2797 Garmin batteries are available on eBay. Advertised as coming with instructions, and necessary small items to help with replacement.

I always have a problem with the results of a search and getting an Amazon result. Many times the result is for a similar number & not what I entered.
So what did your order specify? Check it closely.
Also "replacement" batteries aren't all the same (but close) - they are repro batteries, the may be plug compatible & voltage wise be the same or less powerful than Garmin branded one.

So what part number is on your original battery. You can this one says it works on different models but may not have the same power as an original

What is a Garmin battery. The 26 Ford has a generator and you can use a standard 6 volt group 1 battery. They are usually in stock at Auto Zone and I have also ordered from Napa. Some have said they are available at Tractor Supply. From the description you might be looking at a Lithium battery which are a fire hazard. Can't be put out with water.

Frank, My Garmin is a 2797LM.

The Disk is for a 2597 and 2598 and has instructions for returning the battery if it don't fit.

Whatever is on that disk evidently is not in English, as my computer can read nothing!

The Garmin does not come apart to look at the battery inside.

Norman... A Garmin is a GPS that tells you where to go when you ask. .... a plug-in unit.

Here is a very good YouTube video for replacing the battery in a Garmin 2797LM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcoZC2Fk0l8
It shows how to split open the case with a special tool provided also used to pluck he old battery out of its location

Just because I can, i would contact Garmin and ask why they make a product which makes changing a battery so troublesome. It would be interesting to see their response to us consumers, if they bother to respond.

Everything works in theory.
Reality is how you determine if something works or not.

I'm sure there's more than one Model. T. Owner that uses a Garmin for its ability to tell the driver his miles per hour, let alone directions to where he wants to go.

Guess I am a Model T myself. I still use paper maps! Even in the modern car I use paper maps. My telephone is connected to a pole in the yard and my camera is separate from the phone! I never heard of using such equipment in a T.

Norm,

Oliver and Lisa Douglas had a phone connected to a pole in the yard in Hooterville.

I reccomend spending the extra money and having the phone installed in the house. At 63 with bad knees, climbing that pole would really hurt me.

There is another option. Get a cellphone and it'll go everywhere. Comes with a thing called "Google Maps" which will give you the latest routes without spending money on a Thomas Guide. If they even print those anymore.
Knowledge that isn't shared, is wasted knowledge.

Only cell phone I would even consider using would be one with only a dial phone. The ones with a screen are too confusing.

Frank, thanks for the lead!

I don't trust that company or the other one enough to use them.

I don't see why I was not sent the correct battery with the directions, as the Amazon ad said I would be buying either.
