inner seal rear axle removal

replacing the inner seal and im having a hard time getting it to come to me. ive tried wire, stiffer wire, my sturdy hook isnt long enough. tried a slim jim and i cant pull it hard enough.... i need something to hook it and is capable of being banged on toward me.....
and why would it be stuck in the first place? its hard to see but i think its the neoprene newer version not felt. . (like the replacement i bought)
thoughts?

One needs to remove the bearing sleeve before attempting to remove the seal.

Doesn't the bearing sleeve need to be removed before the inner seal can be removed?

The first step is to remove the Hyatt bearing sleeve. The seal is placed behind it, so once the sleeve is out, use hook tools, long coat hanger or welding rod with a sharp hooked end and pull away the seal.

These pics from the forum by Erick Bruckner shows using a long sheet rock type screw to drill into the seal. In his case the seal was the old leather and metal flange washer type. Once affixed, pull on the screw to remove the seal. Likely could work on the modern neoprene too by screwing into the rubber and metal backing.

Once had to pull a modern seal out, it was a tanged mess, as the previous owner just pushed it in over the Hyatt bearing sleeve, and it never seated.

yes the sleeve is out. i might try the drill a hole and put that screw into it to grab a hold tactic.

Hopefully the previous owner did not use something like JB weld to keep it in place. Do you have anything long enough you can try to push it out from the other end of the axle?

Hi Bill,
How about using a piece of exhaust tubing a little bigger than the axle to drive the center of the seal in to make it cone shaped, breaking it
loose & giving you a better lip to get ahold of?

Could be the previous owner used silicon or hardening type Permatex to glue it in. I put the new style in dry, the neoprene covering should seal against the ring on the inboard side and sleeve holds it tight in place.
