Pouring Tar in coils!!

After rebuilding a few hundred coils during 12 years, I now know why I should wear gloves while pouring Tar in the rebuilded coils.

Where do you source the "Tar" from Andre? I have reused some from old coils but never have enough.

Steep Type3 roofing tar ... Is what I use. ....For most of us, it's best to contact the local company that does commercial roof replacements to purchase at least 5 lb. . instead of buying from major suppliers a 100 lb block

Very good question.. I never used a thermometer on the tar.. I would heat slow, occasionally stirring and when in a liquid state stir more until small bubbles may come up slowly and smoke a little. Stir a little more and notice the thinner viscosity and then pour the waiting coil boxes and top off. Never had a capacitor fail after pouring, and for the heck of it, retrieved the capacitor out of the repoured box and the capacitor itself, the orange drop I use, was not physically or electronically changed from the heat of the tar......
Artificial intelligence suggests temperature around 350 to 375° f, as a temperature to pour fluid hot tar.

Ouch! I wear my welding gloves when I pour coils, this is a good reminder for me.

I got my tar from a local family owned roofing company. I met with the 75 year old owner and explained what I was doing. He examined and smelled(!) my sample and determined that it was #3 roofing steep, as noted above. The company has pallets full of 100lb "kegs" which they melt in heated tanker trucks. One of the guys grabbed a five gallon bucket and filled it with random chunks of tar, and he would not take any payment. A lifetime supply for me.

My local club poured coils the week before I joined, so I haven't had the pleasure....

Also be sure not to over heat the tar or it can spontaneously combust in flames! Don't ask how I know 😉

I use the old tar I took out of the coils.
To fill up the missing tar I have 10 kilo of new tar that I had from a nearby roofing business for free.
