1923 Center door gas tank round or oval ?

Post by Michael Davis » Sat Aug 03, 2019 5:53 pm

Just got this project with no gas tank. I am sure it goes under the back seat? Not sure about the shape?

Thanks Mike

My 1922 Centerdoor gas tank sits under the drivers seat. It is called the square tank. Check your floor boards under the drivers seat and see if there is a cut out area for the sediment bulb to hang thru.

The only USA built Ford center-door sedans to have the gasoline tank under the rear seat originally were the 950 (thereabouts) 1915 models. They were a totally different body that looked similar, but almost nothing was the same as the ones that followed. There is an indication that the Canadian built 1916 models MAY have had the gasoline tank under the rear seat for a very short time. There is one survivor that still had it when I last saw it about fifteen years ago, and it appeared to have been original to the car. A previous owner in fact changed the front seat in order to use the later "square" fuel tank because of the flow problems the early center-doors had. But the original rear seat tank was still in place.
All other Ford center-door sedans had the fuel tank under the driver's seat only.

If your ‘23 centerdoor under-drivers-seat gas tank is like my similarly positioned ‘19 centerdoor tank; I have a real nice clean extra tank I could sell. Doesn’t anyone repro these ?

Lang’s sells a T square gas tank #2900TD in their catalog for Coupes and Sedans. The add says the size is 8” high, 18 3/4 “ wide and 17” in length. Capacity 10gal. Its suppose to fit 16-25 Coupes and Sedans but that may not be completely correct as I was thinking the 24-25 Coupes and Sedans had the later oval tanks. Anyway hope this info helps.

I don't know which years did what, but some early coupes used round tanks under the seat, while other years used the square tank in the trunk behind the seat. Then they returned to the oval tank under the seat. The '24/'25 coupes were all oval tanks under the seat. Four door sedans all had oval tanks under the front seat, I don't know about '23 to '25 two door sedans. '26/'27 coupes and two door sedans used the improved car tank in the cowl.
Except for the true '15s and maybe a few Canadian early '16s, all center-door sedans used the square tank under the driver's seat.

OK. Now I know where it goes and what size it is.

Thanks everyone for the information.

You should have a drivers side metal seat base. The tank sits inside it and is shaped about the same as the base.

Michael, your Center Door is about 400 times nicer than the one I have!
That's cool! I call mine a '24 as it has a '24 engine but I understand that isn't possible. Yep under the driver's seat.
Nice car! Thank you for the pic.
