Low pedal sticking.

Post by blgitn » Sun Jan 05, 2020 9:33 pm

I Re-lined my trans bands today. After a 3 or 4 mile trip the low speed pedal began to stick down. I had to pull it up with my toe, then it would pop up. What'd I do wrong?

low is so loose that it goes over-center with the high speed clutch linkage.

Give the low band adjuster bolt a full turn and resecure the lock nut (bolt on passenger side of hog's head that has two flats on it).

It was either too loose as adjusted after bands were done, or low drum is cracked and is shaving the band into being loose. Let's hope it's not the latter. Fingers crossed.

Check and if necessary adjust the length of your low speed link.

Mark

there may well be a need to check the link, but too long or too short, the low pedal has to go over-center for it to lock in place. The link will not prevent this or cause this. Only excess forward pedal travel will cause this and that is only due to excessively loose low band or worn out pedal support allowing the pedal to ride up over to rotate without squeezing the band. It's one or the other.

Mine was doing that too....right after new bands were installed.

I made the adjustment that Scott suggested above and now it's fine.

After you get it adjusted, it is very important to check that the low band is not too tight. If it is too tight you risk cracking the low drum. I had this happen to two drums before I discovered the cause of the problem. It was the low cam and low notch which were worn and I could not get the pedal to lock the band with the floor board in place unless it was adjusted too tight. This problem also leads to need to reline the bands often because they tend to slip if you set it loose enough that the bands are not too tight. I hope I have not confused you. If the band is too loose, the pedal will stick down, but if it is too tight you get the cracked drum. When you can't get the adjustment right you have a worn out cam and notch. See pictures attached

Good addendum/information from Norman.

I should add to my comment as well...when my new bands were installed, I also installed a new clutch spring and a new cam and notch. So, I was confident that my sticking low pedal wasn't due to deficiencies with any of those items.

Since you replaced the notch and cam, the most likely cause of the problem is the adjustment is too low. Try adjusting about 1/2 turn and see if it helps. If not turn another 1/2 turn. The best location for the low speed clutch to make connection is between 1 inch and 1 1/2 inch above the floorboard. Also see previous posts on how to adjust for free neutral to get the proper adjustment of the link between the pedal and the clutch lever.

Norman...I think you're confusing my post with that of the originator of this thread.

I did, however, the idea would still apply if the original poster has replaced his.

I have not replaced the clutch spring or notch. I'll try adjusting the low band little by little tonight. Thank you all for your help!

After you get the band adjusted so the pedal does not stick down, pull back the parking lever to the neutral position and then on a level surface try pushing by hand. The engine should not turn over when you push. Also try cranking. The car should not move when you crank. The clutch is never completely "free", however, if the band is too tight, it will creep forward when cranking or the engine will move when you push the car.
Another possible cause of the pedal sticking which has not been brought up is possible scraping on the floorboard. When you push down on the pedal, the shaft will move toward the right and if the slot in the floorboard is too narrow, it can bind causing the pedal to stick down.

So far so good; two whole turns and the pedal operates like it should. I took the cover off to make sure I wasn't shredding bands, and took up a couple turns on the brake as well. I guess I just had them too loose.
While the cover was off, I pushed the car back a few feet, then forward: The flywheel stayed still.I
I'll put a few more miles on it this week and see how it settles out.
Thanks again for all the help!

R/ Roger.
