Hello Don,
I have one of these axles that I have not opened up yet and I would like to identify the year of it. Mine has two ribs on each end. On yours, the backing plates are different. One appears to have six holes and ribs and the other is plain and has five holes. Can you give me any insight as to the difference?

Ken, the one on the left (second pic) is “upside down”, so the ribs should be on the bottom, which is hidden by the axle tube. Oops, I didn’t look at all the pictures…… I see what you mean!!

If it matters, very late 1911, definitely 1912. It appears that one backing plate with ribs(note the brake shoe side) has replaced the original style like the other pictured I believe. Like an early 09/10 or 11. Perhaps a 1915 style backing plate?

Here’s a picture of the backing plates on my clamshell.

One backing plate has a extra hole in it more then likely for a accessory rear axle support bracket
