Torpedo horn

Post by TWrenn » Wed Oct 19, 2022 9:40 am

Anyone have, or know of one who has, one of those rather funny looking Torpedo horns they'd like to part with?
PM me if so. Thanks.

Tim, recent discussions about that horn type indicated that is was later in the 1911 production, like post 55,xxx or so. Prior to that the regular horn was used. Here is a very early, maybe pre-production, with a square gas tank and 1910 tyop headlamps.

Bob curious to know, I thought that it was… what’s different about it? I really don’t know what to look for. Wouldn’t mind the education.

Mike, the bell on the horn that is on T-bay has the bell shaped in a more level position.
The "torpedo" horn has a downward droop.

Of course the guys on the assembly line would put on the wrong horn once in a while...

Interesting. A torpedo horn on a 1911 touring. Also with E&J lights rather than J Brown.

I agree with John T.
Mike the horn that looks a lot like a Torpedo horn, and there are quite a few out there that are mistaken as Torpedo horns, was used on EMF automobiles.

Aside from the already mention lack of downward pointing "bell end" that horn is a passenger side mount.

Does anyone know if both Rubes and Nonpariel produced the Torpedo horns. I think most of what I have seen only shows Rubes, but would be curious to hear otherwise.

I believe the horns are Saxon and do not have a makers mark.

Saxon is correct as the manufacturer. That said not all torpedo’s came with that horn. A smaller double twist horn was also used. There are plenty of period photo’s that show that. I believe if I am correct it’s the bell that is smaller.

Keith...Thanks for that info! Since mine is 52,358 then I guess I don't need that "droopy" horn after all, and you saved me a bundle! Man, always something to learn here! Which is great! Thanks again.

I have referred to the Saxon "Torpedo" horn as a "Butugglie," because they are butt ugly!
