WTB Fun Projects/Birdhaven closed spool pinion bearing

Post by NealW » Wed Aug 13, 2025 9:26 am

I am looking for a Fun Projects/Birdhaven converted closed spool pinion bearing. I would prefer the adjustable version, but am open to the nonadjustable kind. Birdhaven still does these conversions, but it is my understanding that the customer needs to provide a crack free housing and my closed spool has a crack.

Please send me an email through the forum if you have one that you would be willing to sell. No PM please, as I will not see it.

Thanks,

Neal

Fyi… The area where the two housings come together often transfer a “rub mark” to the pinion housing that looks like a crack but isn’t. If this is the case with yours, it would still be a good core.

Thanks for the information, but it is a 1" long crack between one of the holes and down the inner wall with the sleeve removed.

I have several closed spools - I'll dig one out & check it if you'd like - I don't have any early, no bump type. A T buddy of mine is doing up a new Timken spool kit but it's for the later open spool.

Yes they have a core charge. What year spool do you need. I have some. Email me via the Forum
The one early one I have to give up showed some hairline cracks around the outside of the lip. So its in scrap now.
Have later model spools in good shape.

The spool is for an early 1914 T, equipped with a two piece drive shaft. Here are some pictures showing the pinion. If you mean by bumps having extra meat around each bolt hole, then yes.

Birdhaven reached out to me and they have a core to build up an adjustable spool, so I am going that route. Thanks to those who checked for one for me.
