Fishing out of season without a license!

I went fishing today. Since it is out of season (and I haven't a fishing license) please do not alert the warden!

BTW, this can (and did) happen even when most precautions are taken. That driven shaft and the fourth main have a long story attached, be relieved to have missed the saga involved!

I spent 4 hours over at the transmission fishing hole a while back trying to land a band nut species. Nearly landed it but fell off reeling in; no hits after that. Luckily Bob Jablonski gave me a tip on another great spot to try; the starter hole. That's where I landed this baby!

I can imagine that there have been countless fishing expeditions of this kind over the years! Do it once and not so much the next time! Like the manual says ‘care should be taken ‘and you know the rest of the story as Paul Harvey use to say!

Four years ago, I dropped the washer when just buttoning up things after the engine rebuild, right before installing engine into the car.
I tipped the engine, nose up. Luckily the washer dropped out of the back end. The fourth main was not installed yet.

ALLWAYS stuff rags between the drums and the pan wall when installing or removing band nuts and washers. Of course then you need to remember to remove the rags!

Dan, on my first stab at adjusting the 3 clutch fingers in my '20, I HAD stuffed the case full of rags.
But, wouldn't ya know, the first cotter pin I removed managed to find that ONE teeny weeny open space between
the rags and the case wall! Of course dummy me just figured why bother with dental floss on the pin, the rags will catch it!! Ha! Learned that lesson quick enough!
I DID get the pin out through the oil drain hole. Whew. And of course the other two pins I used floss! And always thereafter of course. So this could be also posted on the "Stupid Men" thread.

I did use floss on the nut AND stuffed rags on both sides of the drums. Surely, I didn't need to stuff rags all the way up in front of the drums; a dropped nut would simply fall straight down, or so I thought. The floss broke on the first try starting the nut and then nimble fingers lost grip on the nut, flicked it trying to grab the nut and watched in horror as the nut popped up and projected towards the area in front of the drums where I hadn't stuffed rags. Lesson learned and great advice. I stuffed rags Everywhere this last time replacing bands; never lost grip on the nuts and they all started on the first try without using floss safety lines. Go figure...

Steve, I have to wait to get a manifold cooker to decide on that.

Art, you pegged the stage of assembly exactly. On engine stand with freshly mounted hogshead. I tried through the transmission cover access without luck and then found that little drain slot on the bottom (where else would a drain be?) where my magnet JUST FIT between band (wood lining of course) and pan. A bite on the first cast! My plan was to turn the engine tranny down as my next try... anything to avoid pulling the hogshead again!

Dan we most all think we are immortal at times. I fell prey to stupidity and went with a firm and complete rag packing but no dental floss. I use zip ties to hold the band ears. I did reverse and low just fine. What happened is that as I was fumbling around with the brake nut (hmm breakfast, brake nut flakes?) the zip tie slipped off and the spring powered the washer into the very top of the rag... just missing the open transmission access door. I saw it disappear behind the rag and could never make a shot like that again if I tried.

I usually don’t use pedal springs as the wooden bands don’t need them. In fact I have only started using the springs again so as to give the washers and nuts a sporting chance... sort of like squeezing a hook barb closed. I am sure that washer suffered no barb injury!

I see no one chimed in with doom and gloom prophecy about that 4th main... very wise Grasshopper!
