Post by BRENT in 10-uh-C » Fri Apr 08, 2022 3:04 pm

Is it possible that a 1913 KW wooden coil would/could have been installed on a Feb 1914 build??

There are always discussions on "consumption" of inventory, so anything is possible. I found this interesting, so the questions is do you have a 1913 or 1914? You can't always rely on the Title and/or engine #

To my knowledge, the K.W. coilbox used in 1913, along with two others, began to be replaced by the new style Ford coilbox in July of 1913, so it seems unlikely it would would have been carried into the 1914 model year.

Neither the current MTFCI judging guidelines, or Bruce's book mention when the change occurred, so I'll stick with my comment above. The K.W. box was only used in 1913, and is a very reliable coilbox. The reason I started using them is because of the points. Back when I restored my touring in the early 1960's you couldn't find Heinze or Kinston points. Randall Anderson came along and solved that problem. Lang's bought out most of Randall's stuff, so hopefully they will continue the operation.

Thanks Larry. With the Benson Research Center still closed, I am unable to go do research for other projects and look this info up too.

So you mentioned the July of 1913 date of when the metal-type coil box being introduced. I am assuming this date is coming from the Assembly drawing itself? If so, do you have an EI number that corresponds to the print that might give direction on final PO's being given to K.W. for building those boxes, -or maybe the info on the EI gave direction where all remaining inventory that was in stock was to be diverted to Depots for distribution after a certain date instead of to the Branches for installation? If nothing is mentioned, then it would be assumed by me that existing orders on POs and the shipped inventory from those orders would be slated for installation and then used up first?
