Whatizit? Brass top ignition coil.

Post by Matt in California » Sun May 29, 2022 6:42 pm

Here is a unique quail that I found. It appears to be a Ford coil but does not have the two brass connections on the side. Instead it has a screw on the bottom and some sort of spring connection on the side.

I look forward to hearing your responses.

The induction coil wasn't unique to Ford, it was used on many other ignition systems of cars and stationary engines at that time.

The brass top is "very similar" to the typical late 1913 and 1914 style brass top coils (1915s and 1916s had four top screws as opposed to six) that Ford used. However, even there, I think I see a couple discrepancies. Coupled with the wooden body variations (which someone could have altered?), I agree with others that it was likely made for some other application. All the companies (except maybe later Ford themselves?) that made coils for Ford also manufactured and sold coils for other applications! These would include stationary engines as well as many other industrial or transportation uses (including boat motors).
It should be noted that as much as it may look like a Ford coil on the outside? The inside may not be anywhere near Ford specifications or quality! I opened one up years ago and was amazed by how undersize the electrical inside was.
Basically, it is a great conversation piece!

Most people that have one of those "other applications"? Have been using Ford coils as replacements for years already.

To the top of the class Ron P.
As Matt from Cal described the coil box, it has only two contact terminals, would say Bat/mag live terminal(screw) and load terminal(coil box side ) and as there is no third terminal, I would say that there is no High tension coil inside the said coil box consequently the reason for my previously posted reply. Master vibrator coil....n
