Rocky Mountain Brake Pedal Return Spring

Post by ShirkWood » Tue Jul 12, 2022 12:03 pm

Greetings All,

I have a question about where the REAR end of the pedal return spring is supposed to attach on the Rocky Mountain Pedal. The front end goes in the hole in the Rocky Mountain Brake Pedal but where does the REAR end of the spring attach? The photo is "borrowed" from Dan Treace in a Sept. 30, 2012 post on this Forum (it doesn't show the rear end of the spring). As I read the instructions, that came with the brakes, it sounds like I am supposed to attach the rear of the spring to the front of the driveshaft housing where the rear radius rods attach???

So...I guess I'm not smart enough to post a picture so here's a link to the 2012 posting. It is the fourth image down (red transmission cover) in the following link.

Thanks!!!

The spring mounts via a small s hook on the front running board cross bracket top.
Thats the late style running board mounts. (22-27) Cant get pix to load.

Use the running board cross bracket, don’t tell Original Smith, but drill a small hole and place bolt or hook to fasten the back end of the spring.

This was one way, but changed to a hook placed on the edge flange of the bracket more in line with the pedal. The angled position here hit the floor board a bit. Smaller dia. Spring prevents that too, but I like the beefy spring for complete release of the pedal and a firm feel when applying the brakes.

On one of my cars there was a small rod welded to the cross member behind the brake pedal when I bought the car.. I used it. On the other two, I used a small loop of bailing wire on the radius rod connects to the driveshaft behind the U joint. Both methods work fine on my cars.

Here the recent mount, a strong but open hook so it is easy to pull the spring and place the end on the hook. Keeps the spring inline with the brake pedal.

If you had real Rocky Mountain Brakes, you wouldn't be having this problem!
