Steve Jelf is heading to California

Post by DHort » Wed Dec 27, 2023 7:10 pm

I just had a long 43 minute talk with Steve on the phone. It sounds like he is heading to LA tomorrow. Hard to believe. He is planning on hitting Derrick Pang for a Model T ride once he gets there. He informed me that he is walking with a cane, no walker, and he does not think he really needs the cane, but they won't let him leave the room without it. His future plans are to be in Kansas by the end of February. He has some drywall to put up, and some concrete flooring to remove, not to mention trying to cut up some firewood. He tells me every time I talk to him that you need plans if you want to improve yourself. You can't just sit there and do nothing. He has read all the Christmas cards and thanks everyone for sending them. On to sunny, warm southern California.

Sounds like he has the right attitude and an achievable plan. Hopefully his insurance will pay to have someone check up on him once or twice a week once he's home to make sure he's OK. :)

If it is something he wants to do and is able to, he'll be just in time to take in the Holiday Motor Excursion. If he can go, it is worth going.

I hope the weather co-operates! it is supposed to rain Saturday, and maybe over the New Year weekend. However if he flies down, he will be there before Saturday.

Hes heading to California (califunny) just for the T stuff? If he is, GREAT! he sure has drive in him. Pardon pun.

Don't knock that cane... it is WAY better than a darned walker (Oooh, how I hate those things!) and imparts an element of class and distinction to the one who uses it. ;) Serious - I thought it was silly, but it really helped - and, well... let me tell ya...

BTW last year, broke my fool ankle sliding down a hill. Doc tried to make me go down to the ortho store and buy one of those walker contraptions. I would have none of it, we used to call walkers "granny cages", so no way I was gonna be stuck in one!

My honey bought me this really nice cane (traditional looking with the rounded top, etc., Satin ruby red finish, looks almost like Pyroxylin --grins) so I could git around. Now instead of looking old and feeble while I was on the mend (!!!) it made it possible to walk around, and not feel like I was being put in a "granny cage"... And later when I had my leg infection, and then when I sprained my other ankle making a rapid descent down stairs (eg slipping and crashing!) a few months ago, well...

Did I mention that were it darker it would match my favorite of the Ford "improved car" Pyroxylin color pallet? :D

Today has been a really good day for great news. This is one of several subjects
that give me reason to smile today. Good on you, Steve. I agree, without targets
to shoot for ....
More people are doing it today than ever before !

Fantastic news to hear that Steve is on the road to recovery and walking again.

In the most tactful and diplomatic way possible, does anyone know if his Model T is repairable? If so, is Steve likely to repair it?
I saw the photos and it looked pretty mangled up - it's incredible how Steve came away from that accident alive.

I talked with Steve this past weeked. We talked about his car some. When he gets home in Kansas, we will get the 15 to him. He can then make a decision on what to do. That is the only way he can really make that call. He asked about what parts are usable on the 15. I said the Blockley tires faired pretty well and the mechanical horn works. I think he may concentrate efforts on his 23 touring since it is close to being on the road. He is making great strides and working hard to get home to Shorty. We had a great talk and I look forward to our next.

Steve. Glad to hear you have planned some future activities. That indicates you are looking ahead and getting better. You must have the tour America health plan as you keep moving from state. Good on you.

Larry, I talked with Steve yesterday morning, he is excited to be going back. He named every street from where he will staying to your place. He was busy reading four months of mail that was forwarded to Weiser, so we only talked about 10 minutes.

He said he was mailed pictures of Shorty and was really excited to receive those, I forgot who Steve told me mailed them, sorry bout that.

Safe travels, Steve should be in California tonight.

Larry Smith and Kim Dobbins will be next in line to take Steve for a T ride. They have his phone #. Too bad we cannot get Shorty out there. He will be living with his little brother, Mike. Steve told me that his 23 just needs some tranny work and it should be good to go.

I just exchanged email with Steve’s cousin Robert and here is a quick summary in his words:

I talked with Steve last we and he is doing ok.

he doesn’t like and having issues with the trackpad on his new portable and was going to get a real keyboard and mouse sent to him from his home. I suspect that’s slowing him down as dexterity was an issue with him.

Once he gets those I suspect there’ll be an uptick in his activity online.

Larry

I thought you and Kim were going to contact Steve. Or drive over to his location and surprise him with a ride.
I do not think Steve has any way to call you guys.
