Homeowners insurance

Post by ryanpad » Tue Jul 30, 2024 2:32 pm

I layed some pavers and built a patio cover then started my 1913 restoration. The box in the photo was there for two days max before giving the contents-fenders and running boards- to a club member. Apparently the insurance company thinks I’m a hoarder; probably never built a 1913 Ford Model T Roadster.
Everyone else thinks it’s coming along pretty quickly and appreciates it.

Creepy. If those fenders had caught fire, the whole county would have gone up... and pavers.... we ALL know about THOSE!

My auto liability insuror alleged that I do not own my home. As a matter of fact, I do own it, fully paid for for many years now, and that is a matter of public record. Rather than pay a steep premium increase, I changed companies.

And the way things are going with all these disasters in 5 years none of us will be able to AFFORD insurance! Same with the property taxes. They're putting us all in the poorhouse

I got a notice that my insurance company is cancelling when the current policy expires later this year. we live in a fire prone area. We had a fire 100' from us a few years ago but stopped where my son and I had cleared the brush 100' from the house. My son had his car insurance cancelled because he had a minor stroke one year ago. He has regained full use of his arms and legs and has been driving again for at least 6 months. He also has the remains of an old corvair about 20' from the house. I would think that the companies would just raise the rates as home and car values rise. But the state sets the limits on the rates. There have been fires around this area all my life but we could still get insurance. To make this part of the topic. I have 3 Model T's all inside a garage.

I didn't want to violate the "rules," so I started a thread on OT. CHECK it out.

Living in the Hurricane Alley, we are just getting some coverage for wind, hail & water since Katrina. Prior to the 2 companies recently in my area offering coverage, the state had a state government coverage program at about $1000 a month. I just got quoted for one of the companies that have offered new coverage. It’s about 750 a month with 1800 prepaid prior to coverage. I need to mention that the coverage doesn’t begin until you’ve sustained 12% of the value of the house. You must have a new roof within the last 3 years documented. Can’t tell you how well this is working out on retirement pay. So they told me the yard has to be inspected & reviewed for potential hazards. That means I’ll be moving more Model T stuff up to the farm.

I’ve resisted the urge to amass a spares yard but do hold parts until I’m reasonably sure that I won’t regret it. My old firewall for example is going to have to hang around as a guide until the car is complete.
To deny me the ability to restore this car….
is almost an assault on my constitutional right to the pursuit of happiness.

Horror stories on the web about homeowners insurance companies using satalite and drone video to look for unkempt and stored tires, vehicles, gas tanks, etc on your property and then either cancelling you outright or giving you a very short period of time to remedy the issue. Nothing to do with code violations or private property, just their big brother way of picking and choosing.

We used to own a vacation home in FL and someone backed into our garage door and bent it in and the HOA made us replace it ASAP. I went to Home Depot and bought a new garage door. The check out clerk asked us who was going to install it. I said, "me" and she said, "no, your not" and I found out that a certified hurricane garage door installer and city inspector and permit would all be needed to comply with hurricane regulations. Lesson learned. The house sold quickly.
Why do we drive on parkways and park on driveways?

I wonder if You still can buy army surplus camouflage nets like they covered up tanks and artillery pieces with. They sound more like a HOA than a insurance company. next thing they will not insure electric vehicles without a big sur charge due to perceived fire risk. Everything has some risk that's why You have insurance but they only want to insure persons and property that have little to no risk. Some insurance companies do not insure homes where they have a dog and it doesn't haft to be a pit bull. Too bad JC Taylor doesn't offer home insurance. Maybe they would offer classic car garage insurance and cover the attached house ?

I stay as far away from insurance companies as the law allows. I've never heard anything good about any of them from people who have had to submit claims. In Texas, prior to our dear legislature mandating liability insurance for anyone using the public roadways, it was alleged that one in four drivers in Texas was uninsured. Today, it is still alleged that one in four drivers is uninsured, but I now have to pay a substantial tax to insurance companies to use the public roads, and to enfund the Lawyers' Benevolent Fund to keep the courtroom roulette rackets flourishing.

I have no experience with insurance payouts, but I notice they all have very healthy TV ad budgets.... and very nice headquarters campuses.

Not to mention little buildings like stadiums and arenas. State Farm Arena here in ATL.
But, I think the point of the OP was the Big Brother observation without permission creating potential issues. Trackers on automobiles, arial photos of private property, etc.
Has anyone ever sat down and read through an entire declarations page of their insurance policy?

I have already dropped my Hurricane insurance. The price after Hurricane Ian went through the roof. I have cut down every tree in my yard that could reach the house if it fell. Hurricane insurance cost more then my entire homeowner's policy did on a more expensive house in Massachusetts.

Maybe a little off topic but is about insurance coverage.

A friend removed the battery for one of his T cars to charge it. Battery exploded inside shop setting garage on fire. Burned up garage, two model T cars, part of house. End of story his antique car insurance ( one we all use) told him if battery had been in car they would have paid for everything. Since it was not all they paid for was the two Ta , homeowners had to be used for rest. Dan

I solved the Hurricane issue here in SW Florida by dropping the Hurricane insurance, and cutting down every tree that could hit the house enough to cause significant damage. I still have liability, theft, and fire insurance. My house is 20 miles from the ocean. I hated losing several beautiful trees, but you do what you gotta do. To be on topic, the T lives in my garage right next to my current daily driver.
