Carburetor gas storage tank
Some years ago, I saw a small tank that was mounted in the frame rail adjacent to the carburetor that stored a small amount of gas to be used in low tank levels so as not to let the carb run out of gas on a hill. Anyone recognize my pitiful description? Also, I’ve seen small, homemade tanks made out of short lengths of copper pipe, with fittings, to store small amounts of reserve gas to supply the carburetor? Any photos would be appreciated or ideas of such? While friends have shared where they pressurize the gas tank with exhaust gas with great success, I’m a scardy cat for using that idea! And not inclined to use a fuel pump or vacuum pump system! Simple is good!

Get one of Scott’s float valves and you will be surprised how low you can go.

I’m using them now and they work well. I’ve been in a couple situations lately where unless the tank had been in the cowl, myself and a couple others, even with 7 gals, did not make it. Scott’s has eliminated all other situations but these couple. Adding a gallon finished the job.

Just make sure the vent hole in the gas cap is clear, and you won't have any problems

Not seeing the hill, I’d think that if seven gallons isn’t enough you have another problem.

Thought that too when reading, could well be the sediment bowl screen is partial clogged. Happened to me, could not run up a pretty steep hill on tour in VA with my FL flat land touring

Came to find out the screen was partial clogged (photo is another screen) with fine fibers

Soldered on new screen and cleaned the bowl, full gas flow then.

If you're looking for a small gas tank, I think one from an older push lawnmower would work. They hold a couple of gallons and would be easy to connect. I may have one in my shop somewhere if you're interested, I can go look for it.

An auxiliary gas tank, for the most part, is a patch for restricted fuel flow. Note the Long Beach hill climb. All the cars made it over that very steep hill. How many T's, today, run/need such an extra tank? (Not including the "improved " car cowl tank. They have a great advantage)
Climbing a hill requires highest gas demand especially if reving the motor in low pedal to keep a low horsepower T moving. An extra fuel filter, a partially clogged screen, a crimped line, low fuel tank or a carb needle & seat made with too small an inlet will restrict the maximum fuel volume needed to keep running. Scott C's modified hi volume needle/seat solves that one problem of an incorrectly sized seat in the viaton units.

If you disconnect the fuel line and run the gas into a container, you should have a steady flow. If not, remove the gas cap and check the difference. If still bad, look at the shutoff valve and the gas line.

On level ground with five gallons in the tank, with the line disconnected from the carb inlet, and the open line held at the same level of the carb inlet, it flows a stream about 4” out. I’d think that is plenty of flow. I may be wrong!

That should be fine. If you wanted to add some fuel head pressure, wind some annealed seamless copper tubing around a pvc tube. I added a loop on an outboard to prevent stalls when I gassed it out of a wake. It worked. Mount it just above the carb away from the exhaust. I wouldnt add a separate tank that has an opening, keep leak points and fume escape to a mininum.
