Anyone know what is the original wood in a 26/7 coil box?

I don't know, but my guess is any of several common hardwoods would be suitable. It would need to be free from flaws and be kiln-dried and sealed to prevent it from absorbing moisture.

Don't they have a core of vertical wood strips, sandwiched between two venerrs, one on each side?

Under most circumstances, the best way to refurbish a coil box is to buy the plastic replacement for the wood that is available from vendors.

I don't know what tree was used and I threw away the scrap remnants but I am happy with what I got from the vendors.

I just measured an original and a hardwood replacement kit. They are 1/2" thick.
