Ruckstell Data Plate

Post by JBog » Sun Sep 17, 2023 9:48 pm

I'm rebuilding my Ruckstell and the data plate was obliterated. I have the right replacement but can someone tell me what size the serial number is so I can get the correct punches?

The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.

Upper left plate is the one I see a lot, the lower right (earlier) is similar, but they both have the same "number font" as the 8 sided (later) one.

There are at least two versions of the common retangular data plate, early and late. The clipped corners plate was introduced when Eaton took over the manufacturing of the Ruckstell's. It can be found on small drum Ruckstell's as well as the big drum models.

All the original tags have the same font as the upper left. Note, its not a run of the mill stamp letter type.
I believe the stamps were in a multi stamp holder. The #'s are always perfectly in line.
I can measure the font height on an original tag tonight.

That would be great, thank you!

I believe my Ruckstell is a fairly early one; it has the early brass shifter housing. The numbers on my tag are 0.10” tall, and from the left side of the 3 to the right side if the 8 measures 0.50”. While the numbers are not “perfectly” aligned vertically, because they are not rotated and are pretty evenly spaced I tend to concur that some type of fixture was probably used for alignment.

The font type is called Benjamin Franklin.

I'll post a link below for a set of steel number stamps at a pretty affordable price. Better hurry, though. It shows one set left.
