Yes it’s an accessory single shock absorber. Interesting and desirable. I’ve seen one other in my travels.

Looks like drums added overtop of the Ford drum for accessory brakes such as Rocky Mountains. The car had small brake drums, but the accessory drum is larger.

I would remove that accessory shock absorber before I ever drove that car (from what I see my guess is that is a ways off). It is putting loads on parts that were not designed to take them.

The shock uses heavy cast formed brackets on the top and rear end. You can adjust the tension to get desired spring action. I’ve seen a brass case one before. Since I like weird accessories, I’d run it myself just to confuse and baffle other T owners. I’d reduce the spring tension if any concerns about design.
