Cutout or Voltage Regulator

I'm in the process of rebuilding my generator, I was thinking of replacing the cutout with a voltage regulator that is sold by Langs. Does anybody have any experience with this regulator or any other recommendations. Thanks

Getting the regulator has been spotty at best. I suggest calling Lang's to see if they even have them in stock. Fun-project has had issues with some of the parts so not able to supply them last I have seen, so have been on back order for a while now. I went to their page, I could find the regulator/cutout on one page but when looking at the products list do not see them even listed;

At this point I would stay away from the new mechanical type (might be called original type) and go with the diode. The mechanical types that I have seen made currently, are not very robust and would not use them.

Check with Birdhaven Vintage Auto Supply - I heard they have some - they bought out Fun Projects.

A true voltage regulator is the best investment you can purchase for your Model T charging system !

One of my customers was looking for one earlier this month. I sent an email to Birdhaven and an email to Chaffins on 12/4. They both have made the voltage regulator style cutouts. As of today (12/14), I haven’t heard back from either of them.

I believe there has been a supply/backorder problem for quite awhile. At this point I would call around to all the dealers to see if anybody still has one in stock.

It depends on your driving habits and also what electrical accessories you have. If running 6 volts and only use for starting and seldom drive with the lights on, you will be fine with the cutout. However if you have lights on, or other items which cause an uneven load on the battery, the regulator is good to use. With the cutout, just set to charge about 5 amps and drive. If you do a lot of night time driving, you can set it to where it just remains at 0 amps with the lights on.

Why do you not convert your old(or new) mechanic cutout to a diode cutout. It work great for me for many years now.
