Bakersfield Swapmeet 2021 in Phoenix ...a good idea.

Bakersfield Swap Meet in Phoenix ...a good Idea.

Hello all those Brass Era/ PreWar hobbyist who are disappointed that our beloved Bakersfield Swap-Meet has been canceled this year and therefore has an uncertain future.

Don't give up hope. Because, there is a contingent of avid Model T-ers in the Phoenix area who have been working since December on a logical alternative. Their previous discussion here was removed because the topic moved away from;

"if those who typically attend Bakersfield would consider supporting a similar event in Phoenix until the original is reinstated".

I for one think this is a great idea and hereby offer my assistance in any form that these guys (and gals) may need to help such a prewar swap-meet happen there in the desert. My hope is that by rekindling this discussion, on a positive note, those here who also want to preserve this Brass Era/ Prewar event will again voice their support. These good hearted Phoenicians will be meeting again soon to further refine this concept. Please help them in any way you can, if only to tell them here that you are behind their efforts and will attend when they are successful. I am sure that they will be reading what we all say.

Thank you very much.

This is interesting. 2 different groups planning swap meets within 120 miles or so from me. I will be in hog heaven if both events come to fruition. Obviously they will both start off small, but if held 6 months apart OR within days of each other (think Carlisle and Hershey fall meets) they could really blossom. I'm already marking calendars.

I like the idea. I usually attend Bakersfield. Bakersfield is ideal for easy travel from everywhere in California and Nevada. Phoenix is a bit farther from northern California, but not too far from the Southern part of the state, and is also centrally located in Arizona and easily accessible to New Mexico, and even western Texas. Very easy to access from southern Nevada and Utah. And for those who don't mind traveling, most of the western and Pacific Coast states. It is also large enough to have lodging and camping nearby. I hope it will include all early cars from Brass area to pre WW 2. That would include all Model T's and Model A's as well as other cars of the era. If held after we can get the Vaccinations, we would very likely attend.

If this comes together we will definitely be there. A ways farther off than Bakersfield but a prewar meet would be worth the drive. I think turnout would be very good. Looking forward to seeing all of you guys again.

What I like so much is these Phoenix guys don't want to "take over" the Bakersfield Swap-Meet, they just want to provide a Brass Era/ Prewar alternative until such time Bakersfield can be revived. Holding it either before or after the summer heat would be good with me.
And, Rich, I would like to help this effort too. Steven (323) 497-0601

A Phoenix area Brass/Pre War meet in early spring or late fall would be great ... i would plan on attending and making a short vacation in the area ... we have had a mostly mild winter here in northern Colorado so far , BUT i am already ready for some warmer weather ... hope this can come together and also that the Bakersfield meet will continue in the future ...always an optimist ...Gene French

Bakersfield is closer for me, but if they move it to Phoenix, so be it.

I would attend a brass era swap meet in Arizona. If they emulate Bakersfield and have a tour day or two beforehand, that would be excellent.

Rich,
This, what you are organizing, is a completely different event than the exclusively Brass Era/ PreWar "Bakersfield style" Swap Meet that is to be held in October 2021, right?

There have been several posts lately about an Arizona prewar meet to replace Bakersfield. One proposal has been for the Phoenix area in April. The other is for Camp Verde in mid-November. Camp Verde is a bit closer to Flagstaff than it is to Phoenix. I haven't seen anything about an October meet.

Before setting up a pre-war meet in Arizona for April '21, Has someone contacted the National HCCA and the Kern County T folks to confirm that their April meet is canceled forever. We don't want to end up with conflicting meets in April next year. We don't hear much on this forum from the Bakersfield group.

John,
I spoke last night with Kern County Model T Club's past President Wayne Ritch. He told me that the future of their Bakersfield Swap Meet is bleak. His comments stem from club member conversations in the past two weeks. Their local crusader for this wonderful event, Bruce Rimmer, is not in a position to cary on. Wayne has heard nothing about other organizers taking Bruce's place.

What I read in the comments above is that this "Bakersfield Brass Era/ PreWar Swap Meet in Phoenix" idea enjoys support on this thread only if it is solely a prewar venue, ...and, if it only happens in the event that our traditional Kern County version does not happen. This is the crux of the Bakersfield Phoenix plan.

This effort to perpetuate the Bakersfield Swap Meet (hopefully just temporarily) is vary different from the other V8, hotrod, car show, general swap meets also being offered here.

It's my understanding that this premier Brass Era/ PreWar Western States Swap Meet, once it gets going, will potentally be the venue endorsed by the HCCA and the KCMTC. According to the Phoenix T-ers, it would be planned for the second half of October, 2021 in order to avoid conflict with Hershey and to take advantage of the fall "touring" weather there. I really hope this gets off the ground. I, for one, will volunteer my efforts to help see that it does.

To bad that someone in the kern county group won't pickup the ball and carry on the Bakersfield meet. It's already an established meet and a good one. I'd lend my help and support to see it continue.

So are we discussing three different meets, or two? Camp Verde in November would be one. Is Phoenix one single meet with a choice yet to be made between April and October? Or are folks planning two Phoenix meets, one in the spring and the other in the fall?

I'm sure in favor of one in April, and pre war, meaning nothing newer than 1941 or 2. I would attend for sure but not as a seller, just a buyer/looker. If it's open to anything newer the chrome starts arriving, street rod stuff, 57 Chevy and then Mustang and etc. I can go to swap meets closer to me for that stuff, lots of them. Go For it! The hobby genuinely needs it. Bakersfield will be sorely missed.

Steve,

As far as I am concerned, there is only one 2021 Arizona swap meet plan that is specifically designed to mimic Bakersfield. That is the Brass Era and Prewar Only Swap Meet that is being contemplated to specifically fill in for no Bakersfield this year. The Phoenix Model T-ers who came up with this Bakersfield in Phoenix idea told me that they want to do it in the second half of October 2021 so not to conflict with Hershey and to capitalize on the desert's excellent touring weather at that time.

These other Arizona swap meets being talked about here on the forum (April in Maricopa and November in Camp Verde) I'm sure will be fun and worth attending, but, are being presented as more "general" events that include other classic car groups including Model As, V8s, and the 1950s. They are not designed specifically to be "Brass Era/ PreWar until such time Bakersfield can be revived".

Let's support, encourage, and assist these Phoenix T-ers in making this Bakersfield in Phoenix happen.

I believe this was the one Rich was working on. He says its dead, so I assume it's dead. That leaves the prewar meet proposed for the Phoenix area in late October (to avoid conflict with Hershey), and the Camp Verde meet in mid-November. I believe the latter is for both prewar and postwar. There have been three different discussions on the forum about proposed Arizona meets, so there's some confusion on the subject. Sort of like confusion over the various Chickasha meets.

Mr Jelf,

Rich Huggins will be emailing you. His kind of energy is good for our club. You might want to call him at (520) 827-0295. I called him this morning in response to your above post. He told me that his Southwestern Brass/PreWar Swap Meet is still very much on.

So, I cut and pasted the following (below) from his thread elsewhere on this forum. Let's support and encourage him. He's attempting to do this swap meet 6 months before Freighter Jim and Miss Montana's "Brass to Class" event in Camp Verde.

Cheers.
