Fan hub

Trying to take my ‘25 fan hub apart. It’s the old style,I believe, with a grease fitting. Is the fan bracket threaded onto the fan shaft ?

Yes it is threaded on, thats what the flats are for on the fan end.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas! :shock:

Thanks, easier to ask first before making a wrench or trying to find 2 nuts and lock them on the shaft.
Retired ... nothing to do and all day to do it.

Normally a Crescent wrench can retain the fan shaft end, 3966, then just twist the bracket arm off the threaded end.

Dan, Can’t get enough of a grip with a crescent wrench as the end of the shaft doesn’t stick out far enough. Either have to make a wrench, jam to thin nuts on the threaded end or clamp the threaded end of the shaft in a vise, loosen the bracket, cut and replace the shaft.

Use a vise grip wrench and tighten down on the flats straight up. Then use a wrench to turn the crescent wrench to loosen up the hub bolt. It should come out without ruining the bolt.
Sometimes you have to use convoluted ways to remove a bolt in those kind of positions. Maybe an open end wrench with slim jaws can be made to fit.

Hmmmm.... I’ve always been able to stand an open crescent on the large ‘flats’ of 3966 and unscrew it from the bracket. Try that with # 3966 in a vise.

If the fan hub is lacking grease and is old rusted up field variety, use lots of penetrating oil in the hub chamber and on the threaded end too.

If nothing else works, getting rough on the threaded end is not the end of the world. Most shafts are worn, and replacements are readily available.

If it is the old style shaft that would have had a grease fitting on the end, get the correct style for your year when you replace it. This style used oil not grease and is filled thru the plug in the pulley. Tried grease in mine (1921 same style), that did not work out too well, grease was not getting to the bushing. Or replace the pulley/hub with one of the sealed bearing setups.
