Nice photos of some very nice and interesting cars Steve,....we appreciate your efforts!

I attended a couple of the Chickasha swap meets several years ago (....when I first met you and Mike Walker) and in looking at your pictures, it really does look to me like the whole "swap meet thing" is on a gradual decline. Hate to hear that next year will be the last one, but it really does make sense I guess. I'd be interested on your "take" of the whole situation Steve; does it seem to you like attendance/participation is somewhat less than previously years? And, if the whole event does seem a bit "slower" than in previous years, I wonder how much of that is due to Craigs List, E-Bay, on-line sales, etc, etc, and how much of the decline is due to adverse weather forecasts prior to the meet are the reason,....??? Maybe a combination of all to that, huh?

Anyway, thanks again for the great pictures Steve (gotta' love that Packard, right?) and they do kinda' make me wish I'd gone again this year Steve,....but it's a "long"......way from Seattle,......harold

It's not really that bad, but there are a lot of empty spaces. People die, get old and quit, move to the internet, get snowed in, etc. The last few years have brought a steady decline. Add the fact that there's a shortage of young folks getting into the prewar scene, and we get what we get. There are outstanding young folks coming along, just not enough of them.

It’s true there are many empty spaces but there is a great deal of good stuff here and the camaraderie is just wonderful. I sold a good deal of heavy cast iron and bought lots of very expensive brass. When I get back to working on the 1909, you’ll all see the correct Jno Brown Model 60 lites and the E&J will be for sale. Also picked up the correct swivel and a hogs head for customers cars.

We packed up Friday and headed south early Sat figuring Sat would be flat. Only sold $50 worth on Fri, Thurs was the greatest , sold hundreds and found some little treasures too. Sad that this meet is ending so it’s the last. If the 2020 comes off may be same swan song, just few vendors and fewer buyers.

I went to Chickasha this year to mainly see some old friends. Putting the parts aside is a little difficult since most of the relationships I built really developed from meeting and talking to the vendors or buyers over the decades. It’s almost been a monument for me, a place to remember fellow enthusiasts, acquaintances & friends over those years. Some that have passed, the Judge, uncle Jack, Brassman Jim so many more, others too tired to come but still missed. I often wonder if I’ve helped the hobby enough to be remembered in a positive way, hopefully I have the time ahead to do that. For Many of us this swap meet was/is more central, most everything that is big for our hobby are on either side of the coasts which makes it more difficult to attend or participate as a vendor if you live central.This year I really didn’t have anything to sell for obvious reasons but kept my spaces in the south building. I’m hoping that we won’t lose Chickasha or Perhaps a new version of it if Mark takes on the mantel.
Some of it is the majority of the middle to upper age range of our hobby members, lack of interest to be involved by younger folks or other than as a spectator, a younger generation that don’t have to or want to know how things work & human nature to run something down than to build it up. Setting low expectations and meeting them. I wish it weren’t so. I hope that next year, perhaps the last (30th) we can make it huge, if we’re going out, let’s go big, let’s not get all dressed up for nothing. I hope we can all help save something in the central USA for our hobby.

I wish there were enough of them to keep the hobby going at the level we remember. Anyway, I'm already thinking of some things to take and sell next year when I see my fellow old car aficionados at Chickasha for the last time. I hope it will be a bang and not a whimper.

Let me start by saying thanks to Dean for the first pic he posted of me in the gray & black coat gathering goodies. Also, shortly after this pic was taken I was able to meet THE Steve Jelf when he first arrived. That was cool for me! I later saw the 'Jelf-mobile' inside a couple of times but was never able to find him nearby to chat more.


What I find interesting in the PreWar world is that cars are selling when you watch pages such as the HCCA classifieds. The interest is still there. From the professional side of this, there is still interest in restoration of vehicles, so money is still being spent on/in the hobby. Funny thing though, I grew up in the hobby and as a kid going to club meetings in the 60s, I can remember guys talking in the meetings how they were the last group to want Model-Ts as everyone now wants 30s and 40s cars. Then in the 70s a new group of club members said the same thing about 50s and 60s cars would replace the Model-Ts and there would be no one to buy the Ts. Three or four decades later it was muscle cars that would be what everyone wanted and Model-T owners were dying. Fast forward another decade to today and Model-T still sell well. Also, there are more restored Model-Ts around now than what was around 25 years ago, so the hobby is not dying.

What IS dying from my view is the desire to participate at swap meets. When you looked at Chickasha, the biggest thing that was missing was merchandise to purchase. I don't have to tell you guys how much work it is to load stuff on a trailer, drive across states to get there, set up and babysit the parts, then reload what doesn't sell and haul it home, -THEN put it back in the garage. It is a lot of work and most people who own the stuff don't feel like working that hard. There were plenty of younger generation people walking around however they were not carrying much. You did not see many wagons or carts being pulled loaded with parts either. Is it because there wasn't anything to buy -OR is it because hobbyists Replace instead of Restore these days and it is easier to call to order new parts?? I tend to think it is the latter because time has become to valuable of a commodity.

We were parked close enough that with every purchase we made a trip back to the truck. And I think we made fifteen separate purchases, including another '26 frame.

Aside from the weather, which kept some people away, and the every-other year thing that a number of people do, I think the scheduling makes the swap meet unattractive to many. Loading in on Thursday, and then shopping Friday and Saturday is the issue. I'd schedule load-in on Friday, and the main shopping day on Saturday so more people could attend before the vendors decided to pack it in and leave.

Maybe ...but Joe initially set it up to be a Friday & Saturday meet with move-in at 4:00 PM on Thursday evening. That theoretically allowed vendors to arrive after work on Thursday (-or after traveling to Chickasha on Thursday) and have Friday & Saturday to vend, ...and then everyone would go home on Sunday. I don't think anyone ever anticipated it would draw attendees from Washington State, New York and Massachusetts, Mexico and Canada like it does --or like it did this year. Folks coming that far started arriving early to make sure they get there on time, and before you know it people start buying stuff in the hotel parking lot. Then the meeting place was in the fairgrounds parking lot. Once the fence was built, we moved under the bridge. At this point, I doubt it would change anything if Mike or Susie moved it to your schedule. If anything, it may hurt their business as some would not even buy a space. I remember when we used to pull up in the fairground parking area and there was a farmer from Texas that pulled up into the line with a 16' trailer loaded with A &T stuff he had bought at an estate. He probably got there around 2 in the afternoon was waiting to purchase a space when the Erslands opened the gate, however people started buying stuff from him in line. Before the gates had even opened, he sold everything on the trailer and he just pulled out of line to go home. Everyone but the Erslands were laughing about that. The next year they changed the rules that you had to have a sticker before you could pull into the line. Therefore at this point, I am not sure if the dates were moved back a day if things would change as vendors would still arrive on Thursday and most good stuff would be gone by Saturday morning when the gates would be opened.

These are the lamps I mentioned earlier. They are Jno Brown Model 60. This includes the tail lamp which is a little different with a red lens and I believe was later changed to a Model 75.

The last two are the top of the fonts. Clearly they both indicate Model 60 but are different.

They are in beautifully restored condition and will really make the 09 stand out.

Regardng the model 60 Ford lamps and 75 tail light. I have always assumed the 60s for for 1910 model year Ts. They are used with model 15 head lights. I have a very nice pair of 60s for my 1910 and an unmarked tail light that is the same as the model 75. It is interesting that I also have a pair oif unmarked side lights that resemble model 60s. The carbide gas generator is also a Jhn Brown. My model 15s are allsmost perfect, if not perfect. I run a nice pair of 3 tier E&J on my 1910 because they look so nice. There was a set of 60s and a 75 sold at the meet. The asking price for the set I saw was $2000. The seller said it took 10 years to complete the set. I was told that a set was sold at the meet. I sure would like to find a top for the tail light. At the present I use an extra 1911 JB 105 (?) on my 1910. I have heard that some 1909s used a different tail light that was smaller. I have one that resemblels one pictured in a photo of a 1909. Whenever I part with my 1910 (I bought it at the age of 14 in 1946) the buyer will get any extra lights along with the T. I am a firm believer of back up items on your treasured T.
