Important news from the Washington Post

Post by DanS » Fri Dec 31, 2021 12:10 pm

The Arctic Ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer an in some places, the seals are finding the water too hot according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from the Consulate at Bergen, Norway.

Reports from fisherman, seal hunters & explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions & hitherto unheard of temeratures in the Arctic zone.
Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes. Soundings to a depth of 3100 meters showed the gulf stream still very warm. Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth & stones & well known glaciers have entirely disappeared.

Very few seals & no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring & smelt which have never before ventured so far north are still being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds. Within a few years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea will rise & make coastal cities unihabitable.

I must apologize, as I neglected to mention that this report was from November 2, 1922 as reported by the Associated Press & published in the Washington Post 99 years ago. This grave concern must have been caused by the Ford Model T emissions & horse & cattle farts.

😂😂😂 Thanks for the light heartedness. Now if only the doomsayers can plug about 376 of the world’s active volcanoes the polar bears will have more ice.

China is preparing to dispatch a specially-designed fleet of factory scooper ships to gather up the millions of parboiled seals and polar bears, whales and giant crabs and process them into a sea-based, pre-cooked, generic foodsubstance to be marketed in the USA as "Nature's Simply Organic Gluten-free Beyond Crab". The product will be available as a frozen premium faux-crab product and in liquid form (cans or bottles) for protein smoothies and in bulk powdered form for institutional use.

It's good to laugh but trouble is brewing.... some of it is natural, but much has been accelerated by man's activities since the industrial revolution. My grandfather was born in Denmark in 1860, and remembered skating on the nearby Fjord in the winter as a boy. I visited the family farm in 2015 and spoke to a local historian...he said the Fjord hasn't frozen in over a hundred years.

At my age climate change won't effect me much, but I worry about my daughter and those who will follow.

The 1922 article is quite popular with science deniers, but note that it refers to Norway and the eastern Atlantic around Spitzbergen. Can you show me similar articles reporting the same anomaly in other parts of the arctic? As for whether this article proves or disproves any long term trend, no it doesn't. The other day Truckee got fifteen feet of snow. No doubt we will soon be treated to Facebook memes about how that makes a monkey out of Gore and proves science a liberal conspiracy. What happens in a single year or a few years may be a clue, but it neither proves or disproves a long term trend. Do weather records over the past two or three centuries show an accelerating rise in temperatures worldwide that just happens to coincide with the Industrial Revolution? Yes. Anybody who wants to swallow the baloney that it's all a hoax perpetrated by the vast majority of climate scientists who have devoted their lives to deceiving us to protect their cushy jobs, welcome. Eat up. I'm not having any.

25 year mean winter temperature from 1000 to 1800 fell steadily. From 1800 to present, it has generally risen steadily with a distinct drop in rate between 1910 and 1940 and a rise in rate from 1940 to 1975. This 1800 date of the start of steady temperature increase correlates perfectly to southern edge of sea ice in the Norwegian Sea which has been continuously receding from about 1800.

Even more interestingly for the period of 1910 to 1975, the changes were in the Northern Hemisphere alone.

It appears that Global Warming is particularly regional.

all of the above are easily discovered facts, with no opinion as to the amount of man-induced climate change. On the other hand, the IPCC has taken a slice of the 1800-to-present rise in temp and declared that the rise from 1950 to present is 100% your fault, and that the 1910 to 1940 drop in temperature was purely natural.

So who are, or what is the IPCC? From Wikipedia: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is an intergovernmental body of the United Nations responsible for advancing knowledge on human-induced climate change. So, when we are stating that science and scientists are declaring that Global Warming is Man made and can and should be reversed by man, we are relying on folks whose sole purpose for cashing a check, is to study one specific thing that World Leaders already determined to be fact, ie., Global Warming is man caused. Scientific evidence points to a beginning of temperature rise long before man could possibly have an influence, so I'd think that "Climate Science Deniers" are more correctly defined as "Let's Look At All The Data, And Eliminate The Politics Requesters". Facts point to warming long before mankind had the ability to influence it, and yet, there is near 100% consensus among IPCC scientists that it is in fact man-caused. Science is not known to be a consensus-driven field and the last time science had near 100% agreement on a subject was when the consensus was that the earth was flat. These IPCC scientists must be in large part, the children of PhD's who determined without evidence that electric shock would cure ED, inspiring the marketing all sorts of devices to try to prove just that. Now, I've worked with plenty of scientists, and not one of them was told by their boss as to what conclusion to focus their attention on...they simply studied the facts and came to their own conclusion, and so long as a single question remained, there was nothing anywhere near consensus. That is how it works when the boss is not paying you to prove his view to be correct.

If it helps anyone sleep better, to shut down our energy production and manufacturing and transfer it to 2nd and 3rd world countries who care not a hoot about the environment, and then drive electric cars charged by a coal-powered energy grid (which is failing), well, I'd suggest that they take a pill instead, because as the US gets Greener and Greener, the bad guys are polluting the daylights out of the planet and getting richer and richer, to boot.

and anyway, what the hell does any of this have to do with Model T's?

I was wondering what it had to do with a model t also. Maybe it was a subliminal message trying to make us feel guilty and convert them to electric motors or solar panels? 😵💫 Iam confused.

It is already happening in my area. A gentleman approached me a couple weeks ago asking me if I had an extra ring and pinion gear, for his 1927 roadster pick-up. I told him yes. When he came to pick it up, he showed me a picture of his car. And he had converted it to electric power. I asked him what made him decide to build this. His very words, so he would have something he could drive around. I asked how many miles can you go round trip without recharging. He said approximately 40 miles. I kind of laughed and told him not to try to run around with Model T guys.

Just a few weeks ago, I was at the PRI show in Indianapolis IN. There were all sorts of electric race cars, and Ford Motor Co had their proto-type F-150 on display. I just had to make a comment to one of them. That they looked like the lonely Maytag Repair Man. Out of the thousands of people there. Very little interest was shown in the electric vehicles.

Movie stars love to buy electric cars. Once in a while, a movie star may drive an electric car out to Van Nuys to hop in their jet plane and zip to New York for a little shopping and schmoozing ... Meanwhile, it rained fish in Texarkana, and refugees from Beaumont and Port Arthur are flooding inland as the Gulf of Mexico surges inland, hard on their heels...

While on a foot patrol in AFG, the Sgt. stopped the team in a location that
could easily fool anyone as being on the moon, waved his arm in a dramatic
swoosh, and said "Gentlemen ! Behold the fields in which I grow my fux ! ...
and you will see that they are barren ! So, when you come to me, and I say
to you, that I have no fux to give, you will now understand why."

His Shakespearean grandiosity was lost on most of the Marines, but I found
it both amusing and profound. For I, like many, purposely live with an eye to
keeping a minimal earthly footprint, balanced with an interest in actually having
a life worth living. I will be dead and gone soon enough, and frankly, my fields
are barren of any care for what may or may not be a problem, man-made or not.

What I DO know is what I see. And what I see is those most actively trying to
tell everyone else how to live are the biggest hypocrites and political bullpuckers
to ever walk the earth. So, thanks for all your concern. Feel free to spend YOUR
own personal fortunes chasing this feather in the wind. My stop is coming up here
soon, and I have a lot of living to do before I get off this bus.

Question for the Activist:

When they are successful in their effort to create a Carbon Tax where and to whom do we send the bill when a volcano erupts? Also can a sue for damages when I have to clean up the ash :-)

One of my neighbors has a TesXX. Told him I was all in on saving the planet
with my Model T's which I consider hybrids because I run them on Magneto.

I have heard those things can get a "lithium free start" every once in a while that
is the very dickens for the Fire Dept, so I try not to park near one.

55F and raining in Appalachia today. Personal I don’t mind if it gets warmer. 7.9 billion people on this rock have to eat. Probably need extended growing season. Model T all year?

Well I heard there was an entire shipment of brand new Model T's on a barge that was frozen over in an ice-storm up there. Can't wait for it to thaw and reveal what's there.

Back in the heyday of the Model T it was common to hear "get a horse." Many thought cars would never catch on - they were smelly, unreliable, roads were poor, and so on. The naysayers were wrong, obviously. When the Wright Brothers first flew and for many years after, airplanes were seen as just a toy. Planes would never replace trains and ships for long distance travel. Electricity? Didn't come to my area until the 1930's. Telephones? Who needs them?

Did you grow up with cellphones & computers? I didn't. Now I use them daily....can't imagine a time without them. When I started flying there was no such thing as GPS.... I haven't used a paper map for years though I keep one as a back-up. My mini-ipad displays a GPS based moving map that displays the latest information - weather, airport conditions, instrument approaches, you name it.

If one thing is certain, change is coming.... it won't always be welcome but there is no stopping it. Electric cars still have a ways to go, but they are the future. The technology will only get better. Affordable alternative ways of generating electricity will come and fossil fuels will see less and less use.

I don't worry about having to park my T or any other vehicle because of the unavailability of fuel...change isn't that rapid but change will happen. We don't have to like it but we, or our descendants, will have to deal with it.

It's 10F at Liberal, Kansas, 1-1-22 at 11 AM. Wind chill -10 F

And dropping. Forecast here (5 miles north of Okieland) is for 6º by tomorrow morning. Fortunately, because of the shifting winds that kind of cold rarely lasts more than a day or two. There's often a 20º to 30º difference between a north wind and a south wind. Sometimes I open the doors and windows during the day to let a south wind blow through the house so it will warm up faster when I light the evening fires.
The inevitable often happens.
