Post by Dan Hatch » Sun Feb 20, 2022 6:30 am

Anyone here used the Felpro head gasket? I known that it is only available in a full set, but is it any good?

They work well Dan, have used a few over years when the copper was in short supply before.

I ordered a couple of these from Adam after using the one he installed in my engine. I'm not familiar with the Felpro gasket, so I don't know if these are similar.

Look up Felpro # FS 7012B.
That is Felpro part number for a Full set, only way they make it. Cost is way more than what a T guy would pay. But if it works better then the crap we get now.

I will skip the kit, not only because of the price. Some of those gaskets I don't use, and some I make myself.

Sooo.... any news of new copper gaskets becoming available anytime soon? Sounds like a small business opportunity for someone with the skills and equipment to make them.

If some of you have seen what it takes as a machine to punch, clean, dress, and press crimp a copper head gasket and the maintenance.., $150.00 is dirt cheap. It is called limited markets to supply. Those dies alone are about $80,000.00 dollars and from my understanding the folks who were making them, their dies are worn completely out. All businesses have a Return On Investment, ROI. Just Sayin', get them before there are none.

For the likes of me I still cannot understand why so many are afraid of reusing original copper head gaskets. Simply can be used about 4 times by soaking in a tub of water for two days, let dry for a week. They used black shellac back in the day or silver spray. Today.., use Permatex spray copper, retorque after about three or four hot cold cycles. It is only a 5.5 or 6 to 1 compression ratio. No one reads old mechanic books but would rather search the internet for the easiest and of the majority opinion. How many of your cars over the years have reused head gaskets? I bet more than you know!

You don't need punch press dies. A simple and far cheaper steel rule die would do it. But yes, it does need assembly and crimping.

I can recall when both my Grandfather and Father reused Copper Head Gaskets several times over.
As with anything, you only get what you pay for and most times it’s false economy to go the cheap option.
You may well find yourself redoing a job (at great expense of time, money and vehicle reliability) because you saved a few $
on a critical part such as Head Gaskets, Tyres, Tubes, Band Material.........
I try to get the best item available at the time and prefer original worn Ford parts to repo’s. There are of course always exceptions....Model T’s have many of them!

I am not a machinist, but I have seen metal cut in precise shapes by modern CNC's, laser cutters, high pressure water jets, etc. Copper would be a lot easier to cut than steel. For the number of gaskets that would be needed to support the hobby wouldn't that be a cost-effective way to make them? Maybe I'm missing something.

Felpro makes quality gaskets. I would not hesitate to use them. So, if that is all that is currently available, then it's a good deal.

Will the steel head gaskets work. They worked 50 years ago on Chevy V8. Why not a model t. Just wondering if anyone tried and how successful.

They work excellent Art, just use copper spray on both sides!
