Hey Dummie SaraJane is trying to tell you something

Post by ironhorse » Tue Apr 12, 2022 8:25 pm

I decided to drive SaraJane (27 RPU) to the ageing/rehab center where my Bride is now staying until May 6th when I retire so I can take care of her. About 1/4 mile away SaraJane started tugging to the right I thought no problem when I get there I will see what is wrong, then the tug became a pull hard right then I heard the unmistakable sound of a flat tire. I pulled into the Ageing/Rehab facility, fortunately it was on the right, the valve stem was at a funny angle and fell completely out when I touched it. She and I got a wrecker ride home  ,

I've had some rubber stems fail right where they come through the rim. Result is a total, ain't gonna air that up flat. The stems looked OK until bent slightly. When bent, they'd show deep cracks.

If the tube is good, you could use a period correct metal valve stem. Steve Jelf showed me how to do it in one of his post or a video. I had trouble with that tube always leaking down & had a Schrader metal stem in my junk bucket. Easy enough to do and that tire rarely needs air though I check them all before I go anywhere.

A shop that fixes semi truck tires probably has access to a rubber valve stem that can be installed in your existing tube. I have had this done recently.

You are right about truck tyres Les, but these days most trucks run tubeless tyres and the rubber stick-on stems are becoming increasingly scarce as a stocked item. I have better luck with the outfit that does our farm tyre work. They deal with much more older stuff and generally can help.

Thanks for the info but that tube has 10 patches and was stuck to the inside of the tire I ordered 2 new tires for the front with new tubes

GR, I have to say "ditto" to what Scott just said. Prayers to you and your bride. My dad was
mom's caretaker until his cancer ended up taking him first. Never thought it would end up
that way. Fixing a flat is childs play compared to caring for your loved one 24/7. Bless you and good luck.
