I have a very nice running board tool box that has no key. Are the keys being reproduced and are they all different configuration or the same?

There is no "Model T tool box" produced by Ford, as folks sometimes assume. The boxes were an aftermarket product made by several companies for use on any car. They vary in size and shape, and so do the keys. I would consult a locksmith.

I tried to make a key for my recently-purchased toolbox without dismantling the lock. I was unsuccessful. I had access to the back of the lock and took it appart. It had been damaged due to a missing key. I made a new brass slider bolt to replace the damaged one. I made a key from a scrap sawblade since I had free access to the inside mechanism. I still need to make a new spring for it. I have .030 stainless MIG wire for that job. The mechanism is not complicated but making a key without knowing what's inside was difficult. That's where a locksmith comes in handy.

As Steve said, there were many aftermarket tool boxes made and for each of those many different cut keys. So to start with what does you lock look like - that may help ID the shape of a key blank. Here is an example of two different period tool box locks. The blanks look similar just cut different. Even for the Yale lock there are two slightly different shaped blanks but they are cut the same. Now if your lucky the middle tooth is what releases the lock, so its possible to pick these types of locks
