Does anyone know the body builder of this 1922 station wagon?

Post by Blueabbott » Tue Apr 09, 2019 9:51 pm

I have recently obtained this 1922 Station Wagon. The body is original and the car was restored in the mid 1960's. I remember this vehicle in the local antique auto club when I was young. There is no name on the body as to the manufacturer. It looks a lot like a Martin Parry body, but I am not sure. None of the body irons have MP cast into them, so I assume that this is a body of another manufacturer. Bodies of that period are all similar.

Looks like a very nice depot hack. Good luck with it.

Beautiful looking station wagon ! From the one view you provided, I do not see any details that would tell me it’s a Martin-Parry body. As for M-P , I’ve not seen any M-P markings on the ironwork, and I’ve had 4 various models all apart. Some real late M-P vehicles have some logo on stamped steel parts, such as door step plates and tinwork that hold the back corner on.

As for M-P , they originally started as the Parry body company in Indiana , merged and became Martin-Parry. There is a website , Martin—Parry.com that has a lot of info and many examples shown. The dip in the front of your roof is very distinctive, as that took some time and more wood. That would make me think a smaller company, but I’ve been wrong before.

I would go to coachwork website, and perhaps you can find something close or exact to what you have. Most if not all body companies proudly displayed a small metal body tag somewhere on the body. Look for some small nail holes a couple inches apart, usually on the seat board, or lower edge of the right side of the body.

Keep in mind, there were several large body companies, M-P being the largest and becoming Chevrolet Body Division around 1929. There were other large companies, and literally thousands of small companies across the country, and likely some one-offs, too.

Per the recent request, attached are further photos of the body. There is no evidence of a body plate, only the plate from where the car was sold.

This is a photo of the only plate on the body, which is the dealer that had originally sold the car.

Thanks for all the responses. I received an email from a member who has a 1922 Ford is almost identical to my car. His body is a Springfield, so I assume that this one is also. Thanks again!
