This thing with the splash pans is a result of no one understanding their true purpose.
Also it is a result of experts weighing in, giving their opinion as to why splash pans are a nuisance, or worse, a part that is not necessary...
Just a note, I have yet to re-find an article that covers testing splash pans and wings (fenders) dated about the time of the introduction of the Model T (1908). Again British Press referring to test being don on the practicality of shrapnel guards.
The shrapnel guard was named after a patent given to Harold J. Shrapnel , Brixton , England . Filed December 4 . 1908.

I don't know why anyone would want to test engine pans, unless Ford did for some reason, perhaps for durability. Standard fenders, engine pans, and bodywork would be almost useless againt shrapnel.

Damn! While I have never had any trouble with my T (well, at least on THIS scale) I am pondering fabricating some floorboards out of steel plate!

I don't think splash pans would protect from that. Looks like the flywheel came off. Hopefully the front seat persons legs were saved. I have a hogs head with a hole in it, but not completely cracked off. It was in a bunch of parts I bought many years ago.

Loose flywheel to crankshaft bolts almost the cause to come apart like that. Somebody didn’t install the safety wire through the bolts and then

If they are calling fenders wings i'll bet that what they are calling splash shields are what we would call splash aprons and the shrannel is rocks thrown up by the tires.
