What year is this brass T?

Post by Chris Bamford » Wed Nov 15, 2023 2:45 pm

Hello all — on a bit of a deadline here, giving an interview this afternoon about the first car to travel Edmonton to Jasper (Alberta Canada) "altogether by motor road" one hundred years ago last week. 235 miles, 14 hr 40 minutes, two overnights.

This is the car. A brass-rad T for sure, presumably Canadian-built, but I don't know what year. Can someone please clarify? Thanks!

The sign says

The chronicle of "firsts" is always interesting !
Brass T with a vertical windshield, rounded rear fenders and electric headlights - '15-'16 I'd think, though the rear fender is later, with a "crown". Interesting that the car chosen for the journey was 7 or 8 years old at the time. Proven dependability !!

Thanks Rich & Pete. Very helpful.

The tourists had to "change horses" midway, as the Macleod River ferry was laid up for the winter but an ice bridge had not formed and the water was some 3' deep. This is the car they drove to finish the trip.

The initial car is described in a contemporary account as "Ford car 1501". Not clear to me if this was a serial # (if so, very very early) or the license #.

Could be just a reflection on the head light bucket but it looks like fork mount, that would make it very early Canadian 1915 model. but it has a later rear spring.

15-16 but with updates. The windscreen has offset hinges to accommodate the later 1917 windscreen that is taller when folded.

Another ‘15-‘16 characteristic is hood louvers.

Axle backing plates are smooth. That would be 15 in the states.
