Steve Jelf Sunday, 11/19

Post by DHort » Mon Nov 20, 2023 12:03 am

What a fantastic day today. Steve's cousin Elizabeth was with Steve yesterday and today. She went with him to OT in the morning and both of us were with him for Speech Therapy and PT. I have never seen so many smiles on Steve's face and so many tears. Elizabeth was able to Facetime about 6 relatives for him and the young man taking care of his house and dog. She also got the iPad charged up and working. Steve was not able to use the iPad, but hopefully OT will be able to work on that. He is able to read posts on this forum and watch movies as long as someone sets it up for him. Last night and this morning he watched High Noon with Gary Cooper and was telling us all about the movie during lunch. He was able to recall a lot of facts about the movie itself.

Speech Therapy watched him eat his lunch. Four huge globs of pureed corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and some brown stuff. He smothered it with salt and ate it all. At the same time he was cracking jokes and fooling around with the therapists as they watched him eat. Bet they give him 4 more big globs for dinner.

After all that they took him to PT and worked him for an hour and a half. He walked on the treadmill forwards and backwards. They have a large mirror and he watched himself exercise with the look of concentration on his face. Then she made him walk up and down the stairs. Finally his time was up and we went back to his room.

You know he is not allowed to leave the building. He said if he tries to leave they will snatch him up and haul him back to his floor. It is all a conspiracy to keep him confined here. There is no way he can sneak himself out to even get a breath of fresh air. I think if I could get him on the roof he would dance about like Dick Van Dyke and the rest of the chimney sweeps.

They are planning on showing him the door on Dec 8-10. Hopefully he will be able to head to Montana where Robert and his wife will take care of him until he is able to go home with assistance or a care facility.

Thanks for the update. I think of Steve often. Although a bit younger,
I feel I push myself to stay in the young lane much as I see Steve doing.
I hope I can go full speed until the end, just as I hope Steve can.
More people are doing it today than ever before !

Problem is, they know if he can escape their guard, and someone has a T parked outside, he'll be in the wind faster than you can say Ty Cobb... Might not even need a getaway driver... ;)

Sounds like you're doing great, Steve... we're pulling for you over here.

Wow! Great that he is doing better!
He has lots of long distance friends, that's for sure!

Me bad. His cousin is in Idaho, not Montana. Not much difference. Both states are
a long ways away from Chicago or Kansas.

Zack lives across the street. He is taking care of the dog and other animals. He also
is keeping an eye on the house and goes over to make sure no creatures or humans
have moved in.
Steve has a cousin living in Madison, WI who I met Sunday. Very nice young lady who
got Steve's iPad up and running.

Good to hear of Steve's recovery. Is anyone dealing with his insurance company or the other person that hit him' insurance to work towards a settlement. Must be some huge medical bills stacking up.

Two answers
1. Hagerty has looked at Steve's car. I do not want to know the outcome. It is none of my business.
2. If all goes as planned, Steve will be transferred to a suburb in Boise, ID.

I will probably go to see him again sometime next week. He does have a family member, and other
Model T owners visiting him on occasion. Hopefully his OT can work with him so he can learn to
communicate with all of us soon. The knowledge appears to be there, but the manual dexterity is
not yet up to handling a keyboard.

I called the rehab institute tonite. They will not tell me anything unfortunately. The hospital was much easier to get help from. I was told to call the evening before if I plan to visit again to see if he is accepting visitors. Maybe later this week.
