Another part not being made?

Post by Dan Hatch » Thu May 30, 2019 7:05 am

Heard last night that another part will not be made anymore. This time it is rear axle ring gears and pinions. Any truth to this? Dan

No idea if that's the case or not, but I think that they were all made by Mark Auto in New Jersey. If they're discontinuing them, maybe Dan MacEachern will take them over. If he does, you know they'll be done right.

It would be interesting to know why the ring gear and etc are being discontinued. My first thought that the company was bought out and there wasent enough revenue being made from the parts. Just a guess of course. Maybe the owner just decided to retire or?
I was thinking there were around 3 companies making the ring gears, axles and etc.

Dan,

I believe you may have unknowingly pulled a Johnny Carson. In 1973 Johnny joked about a toilet paper shortage and then it caused a scare so that sales of toilet paper sky rocketed creating the shortage he joked about. Now there will be a big run of ring & pinion gears and all the housewives will run to the nearest Model T store a stock up on ring & pinion gears so we won't be able to get them!

I was under the impression that Mark Auto discontinued these several years ago, and someone else stepped in. That’s why we saw the gear sets jump from $175 to $400

I went up to Corona today and visited Chaffins Garage. According to both Dave and Glen, production of all crown wheels and pinions has stopped. No one is currently manufacturing these parts.

I wouldn’t worry about this too much unless I needed a set right now. It is one of the very basic T items and I would be real surprised if they weren’t available again inside of a year.
