Value of engine/trans
Been offered a "complete engine trans". Assuming it's complete from front of block to back of trans, what's the value? I don't need it and if it's cheap enough, I'll pick it up for a spare "in case of"...
If it's locked up or, missing stuff, I'll deduct from there.

No freeze cracks, complete, together in one piece, and crank turns over, $85 if you dont need it, and $800 if you do.

Re: Value of engine/trans
The are too many factors to consider to set a price. Are real nice, running T engine from the 1920s could be worth $1000, more or less. a common used one in unknown condition, perhap $400. A rear nice 1909 engine, all complete with original parts is worth a real bundle, at least $15,000. 10 years ago, a complete1910 engine sold for $ 12,000. Good, nice complete T engines are not as common as they were 40 years ago.

Re: Value of engine/trans
Depends on who you get it from. If they are a good mechanic and have overhauled it or rebuilt it, could cost a lot more and according to what year it is makes a difference too. If no good, it could still be used for a boat anchor, or buoy anchor.

Re: Value of engine/trans
Cool thanks. I'm trying to get a description, serial number, history before I drag it home. More curiosity than need. Is like to get it to disassemble and see how it's all put together. I've taken apart and rebuilt dozens of A series, B series and XPAG motors and learned quite a lot. The model T motor will be a new experience.

Read the service manual before tearing it down.
You can do extensive & unnecessary damage disassembling a transmission.

Yeah if you get it tearing it apart wouldn’t be first thing on my list. Compression test would be #1 absolutely. You gather so much knowledge from a wet/dry test it can save you a lot of $ and time. If that was cool I’d probably have a look at the bands/lining. Beyond that if there was any chance of running it I’d do that. As to price sorry can’t help you.
Forget everything you thought you knew.

Re: Value of engine/trans
What John said, "Read the service manual before tearing it down." There may be other "gotchas" but if it has an electric starter and you try to remove it before you remove the starter bendix -- you will damage (read will need to rebuild or purchase a rebuilt or used) coil ring. If it doesn't have a coil ring -- maybe the case if set up for a distributor -- it probably doesn't matter.
Don't have the Ford Model T Service Manual (T-1)? It is available from the vendors as well as online at: https://www.cimorelli.com/mtdl/servicem ... efault.htm And some of the local clubs also have the MTFCA pamphlets and Videos some about the engine. Available from the vendors if a club doesn't have library.
Good luck,

Interesting. So I did my homework when I was working with my starter and knew the precautions. I'd do the same with the engine/trans before disassembly. I also have the service manual.Hap_Tucker wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 6:12 pmWhat John said, "Read the service manual before tearing it down." Re: Value of engine/trans
Value also depends on history. If you know it has been rebuilt by a pro (Joe Bell, Mike Bender, Erik Barret, etc.) that's one thing. If the history is unknown, that's quite another. The latter case is much more of a gamble.
The inevitable often happens.

Re: Value of engine/trans
It's a 1926-27 engine; From the hazy pictures I can see the cylinders are rusty/rusted.
Most likely a 75-100 dollar special as it will be cracked , brake drum maybe good but reverse and low could be bad along with drive plate.
When they're rusty like this means that the cam could also be pitted and crank could be bad.
Block cracked etc.
What you're left with is a 4 dip pan and hogs head and maybe some small parts.
You'd spend some money to get it back into running condition.
In other words total rebuild.

OOh. Did I miss something or did you leave out a minor detail? Like it's in pieces? To me that lowers the value quite a bit.

Looks like $100-200 if you don't mind going to pick it up.

The value may be in the parts - 1926-27 starter Hogs Head and the pan if usable.

Now that there are pictures, I take back my initial guess and lower it to $45.

Yeah, not really interested at $300. I was really just curious about getting it and it's close enough to pick up potentially saving it from the scrapper.

Re: Value of engine/trans
It's a 26-27 motor. They used to be dime a dozen in the 1960's... Now they're scarce-ish, but have issues that earler T motors don't. With the damage on that one we can see (and not knowing if it has the 1927 freeze plug crack) I'd say probably a buck to a buck fifty... No clue about the trans, and well...
Yeah, I'd want to look it over, offer a hunnerd fiddy, and realize I'll have a project.

Re: Value of engine/trans
No scrapper is going to give him $300. Make him an offer of $100 and see what happens. I'll bet that offer would still be more than scrap value.

Re: Value of engine/trans
That's a good point. I figured that might work and I might be able to recoup the 100. I honestly have like 10 engines and blocks for my other cars (MG/Healey) so I do not need anything else laying around and just hate to see anything go to waste.

Re: Value of engine/trans
I've been buying whole engine/transmission cores at $500 each for years. I figured that was a fair price for something that needs to be rebuilt.

Re: Value of engine/trans
I think I would too, hard to go wrong, and if nothing else, a good block to practice on if it is boogered. And you never know, it could be alright.
