I know people who are top notch carpenters, I know they use "spirit Levels", "plumb bobs" "stud finders" (my late wife wanted one of those) and if you make wine or whisky cask then you need a "bung hole borer" and a "bung cork cutter" Well I was looking for the tool to mark where to put the hinges for cabinets, i went to 3 stores to try to find one I was in HD and was trying to describe what I needed to an employee when a cute little woman who was doing inventory
came up and told the employee what I needed was a butt marker

Re: strange names
Oh, I’ve been there! The first time I needed a butt marker, I had no idea what it was called either.

We have "Surprise Lilies" in the garden. However, everyone who know what they are call them "Naked Ladies".

Re: strange names
I was in the hardware store yesterday. I wanted to fix the cord on my shop vacuum. It is a local store run by a friend of mine, we knew what I needed, I took it to the checkout counter. The lady at the cash register looked at my purchase and said, "What are those called." with a quizzical look on her face. I was buying a package of butt connectors. She is new to the hardware store.

I’d love to have been there to see the look on her face if you’d purchased cast iron nipples…Herb Iffrig wrote: ↑Wed Jul 31, 2024 8:27 amI was in the hardware store yesterday.
