FS: Prest-O-Lite Acetylene tank with straps

Post by jamesb » Wed Jan 29, 2025 6:44 pm

I have a Prest-O-Lite acetylene tank for sale with running board straps. I believe this to be a "B" tank based on the offset valve. One of the running board straps has the Prest-O-Lite logo on it while the other one is slightly different without any markings. The tank itself appears to have been painted at some point, but the label was not (see picture). There is a Prest-O-Lite logo embossed on the side of the tank and a gauge on the bottom of the tank.

Due to the size and weight, I am only offering this for local pickup in Burbank, CA or am willing drive a reasonable distance to meet someone.

Asking $50 or make me an offer. My main goal is to make sure this doesn't end up in a landfill.

Disclaimer: I have limited knowledge as to the condition or history of this tank. It appears to be empty considering I turned the valve and did not hear/smell gas and the pressure gauge on the bottom of the tank reads zero. Anyone purchasing this tank does so at their own risk and should have it inspected to ensure that it is empty and safe for use. I make no claims as to the condition of the tank or its components (valve, gauge, plug, etc.) nor am I aware of whether or not it contains asbestos inside.

Even residual explosive gasses can be very difficult to ship! Special permits may be required?

I was told by my gas supplier what they would not even look at one with a gauge in the bottom.

You can sometimes get the pressed script tanks from your gas dealer if they are a large dealer and the counter person is friendly enough to look thru what they have. They aren’t all that uncommon yet. The last time I exchanged one there were maybe five of them between three pallets of acB’s (acetylene “B” size). No exchange tank will have a gauge anymore but I’ve seen plenty with a plug where the gauge used to be. I believe a plug is something that should cause a tank to fail recertification but there seem to be many out there.

I think shipping this things will be very expensive given the size and weight in addition to the hazmat aspect. Since it once contained a flammable gas, the shipping requirements are quite onerous if it's even possible at all. So unfortunately, I don't think shipping it will be worth the hassle or expense.

If there's anyone local to SoCal, you're welcome to take it for free. I need to clean it out and just don't want it going to the landfill.

Too far for me. I would love to pick up a spare.
California is really strict about those. Most gas supply houses will NOT ever have one of these old tanks. In California, NOTHING over a certain age (I don't recall the number, but all of these are way beyond that!) can be certified or legally refilled. I haven't checked in a few years, but about five years ago I knew a welding supply that would refill these for antique automobiles.

Wayne - I can actually arrange a drop-off in Grass Valley the week of 2/15, if you're interested. Look out for an email from me and we can get this figured out.
