Kevlar band question

Post by Steve1920 » Fri Jun 20, 2025 11:31 am

Guy's,

Is there a Kevlar band supplier out there that you would recommend? I don't know what brand Lang's offers, but they are out of stock on them.
Is there a good, better or best ranking with these or are they mostly the same?

Thanks.

Steve

Thank you for the reply. I also see two other vendors in the Vintage Ford, with one of them selling a set for under $100. Cost is not the primary concern, the quality of the band material is. Has anyone had better or worse results with any of the offerings or is everyone selling the same material?

Thanks.

I have used kevlar from Rockey My Brake. Steve Coniff in Co. He is gone.
The lining is a thick, tight woven yellow material. Great stuff.
I have seen a vendor supplied kevlar that was pink. Langs?? looked good also.

I have been supplying woven kevlar transmission bands since the early 80's, but have recently removed my ad from the Vintage Ford. Return on investment was getting lower and lower. Since the passing of my Brother, I have just about stopped supplying bands, but have about 50 sets left in inventory. When they are gone, it's done... My price and quality has been the same for the past 5 years and will sell you whatever you need. Narrow set: $119; wide set: $139. Shipping is extra. Contact me via PM or call at 518-755-0986. Satisfaction guaranteed or money returned, no questions asked...

Not knowing how many folks make Kevlar band lining besides yourself, does this mean that we're about to face a shortage of Kevlar bands?

I can't say for sure, but after the 50 or so sets that I have in inventory, I'll no longer supply bands. My USA supplier makes me buy 5000 feet of material, since my specs are different from what he normally weaves. He has to re-calibrate the machines just for me. I no longer own Model T's and due to my brother's passing, I don't have the ambition to continue. It was a good ride...

From the most recent issues of Model T Times and Vintage Ford, the independent suppliers (outside the regular T nat'l vendors) remain as :

Final Answer Kevlar linings, from Rocky Mountain Machine Co. Monument CO (303) 905-4605

Wearever Kevlar linings, Andy's Garage Ellendale, DE (302)245-7276. andygarage@comcast.net

Have bought Wearever at Hershey at spaces there. Used it, and is good lining.

At this point there are not a lot of options. Wood, Kevlar or find good original set of the cotton linings. Pick your price point. I have a set of Red Hook along with a couple of stray Kevlar, part of set wood (narrow band types) and one set 26/27 of the tar babies (saving those for a friend). These are my backups in case the wood bands I just installed don't work to my liking (pretty sure they will be just fine). Current Langs online catalog does not even list wood or cotton, just Kevlar that I saw.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

I love my Guinn wood bands! You have to take the hogs head off, but they do a great job.

Just wondering if this is the company that makes the webbing that the manufacturers use to make the transmission band kits.

By the looks of this company and reading their information on what they can make these folks could make Model T band linings but the cost to do it would come into question. Like other items would there be enough interest and could enough be made to keep the cost down.

Steve Coniffs daughter is still selling Kevlar bands for the family, Rocky Mountain Machine Co. Monument CO (303) 905-4605. Great people to deal with.

Ouch, gear bands have become some what expensive, but if we want the cars running and stopping we just must pay the price.....

Its possible that this company has been the one making the material that others have cut up into kits. Also possible that the Model T band sizes (width & thickness) where common. No one has revealed where they got there stock from to make the band kits

Earlier in this thread, Frank did say that the material for his kevlar bands was a custom order, not "off the shelf" product. I think that it would be unlikely that another supplier would have comparable stock in inventory.

Steve, It is my opinion that not all bands are created equal, but then, I am biased. If you need to see these bands in person, I'll be set up at the Wateerbury, VT show in August and you can kick the tires, so to speak. Just to let those who asked, I'm not leaving the hobby, just changing direction. My twin brother, John, passed away in late March from complications from Covid. Since we more or less shared the effort on these bands for nearly 40 years, it's hard to continue, but like all things, we must keep going forward. Thanks to all who expressed kind words.

Frank
