Brake material?

Post by Dan Hatch » Thu Jun 26, 2025 5:56 pm

Look at the pictures of this brake material. I got this in a load of stuff from a gentleman that cleaned out Ford dealerships in the 50/60. It looks like 26/27 brake material. Did Ford ever sell it in bulk? The roll is held closed by a small tack in each end. See pictures. I looked in some of my parts list and don’t see it unless it’s the 10 sets listed under the part number.
What you guys think?

Not sure, this stuff is pretty hard and brittle.
I have a set of 26/27 shoes someone put Kevlar transmission bands on. That might work. Dan

Pretty standard woven brake lining. If its old enough it may well contain that stuff that starts with an "A" and ends with an "s". Still the best regardless!

Even the new stuff sold by the foot is stiff as is the Model A woven lining. Guessing maybe 3/16 thick? How wide?
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Same as a 26/27 big drum brake shoe. Supposedly came out of Ford dealership in the 1950.

The replacement 26-27 parking brake lining that Lang's sells in stiff, because it has fine fibers of brass wire in the lining material. Difficult to trim and cut.

Here is close-up of this lining, note the glint of the shiny brass rivets matching the glint shine in the lining material.

Used it to reline a pair of small drum aftermarket shoes, had to grind off the overhang, handling with gloves as the material with the wire imbedded is sharp!

As used on the 26-27 rear brake shoe

Ford listed the 2566D Hub Brake Shoe Lining (26-27) in piece only. Cut to length. Price $.50 ea. 2 per car. Maybe bulk was supplied to the Branches that then cut and sold to dealers??

Follow-up on my post on the Lang's linings with the brass wire embedded. The woven wire gives superior wear and stopping ability for this type lining.

Here is one on-line source for that stuff, priced per foot.

McMaster Carr sells this brake lining in assorted thicknesses & widths.
You can get exactly what you need without having to trim the width.
I prefer the woven lining on RM brakes over the solid, hard, chalky grey material they come with today.

Besides being woven, you can get it with brass wire woven in. ^

That hard lining from everything I have read is wrong anyway for pressed steel drums, should be the woven material. Woven allows for quicker dissipation of heat.
