Anti tarnish headlamp covers. Plz read

Post by Karl Von Neumann » Mon Dec 15, 2025 1:35 pm

Working on getting some anti tarnish coverings made for my car and a few friends. May even make these to sell. So far we have worked out fitted headlight covers for 13 14 models (earlier models will come soon) hub cap covers and speedo covers. Pototyping of the rad and cowl lamps are progressing. All covers are made of water proof black canvas outside and anti tarnish cloth inside. Just putting this out there to see your reaction opinion wants needs interest etc?

Do you know if these will also prevent silver reflector tarnish?

I dont think so? They would drastically cut down on dust and ambient moisture getting on the reflectors and into the lights for sure. Mainly the idea being is to keep dust dirt finger prints of the outside of the lights. Thus making cleaning easier when you take the covers off after storage. These arnt going to keep the lights pristine clean but they are a major deterent.

Here's a pic of the finished hubcap cover. Held in place by a elastic band sewn inside the layers

I would be interested in some covers. Will you do one for Carbide generators as well?

What type of "anti tarnish cloth" are you using for the inside of the covers?

Dan

I use anti-tarnish storage cloth for some of the jewelry that I have made, and Pacific Silvercloth is considered the premier product for silver and other precious metals. So I did some research on whether or not a similar product exists for brass. I was not able to find an equivalent product for brass. This is what I found out about using the various available anti-tarnish storage cloths:

While Pacific Silvercloth® and similar silver-guard fabrics are designed to protect silver from tarnish, they are generally not effective for long-term tarnish prevention on brass. Here are the details on using these materials for brass:
- Ineffective for Tarnish Protection: The anti-tarnish technology in silver cloth is specifically designed to neutralize sulfur in the air, which causes silver to tarnish. This chemical process does not work the same way on brass, which oxidizes differently.
- Safe for Storage: While they won't stop tarnish, these cloths are soft and safe to use as a buffer to prevent scratches on brass during storage.
- Better Alternatives: To prevent brass from tarnishing, you should use a clear sealer (like lacquer or a specialized coating) or keep it in an airtight container with desiccant packs to manage moisture.
I personally don't like sealers for my T's brass. The reset process when the coating starts to wear is not worth the short term benefits, in my experience.
- Cleaning: While the storage cloths don't protect brass, specialized polishing cloths can be used to clean, polish, and shine non-lacquered brass. I use Sunshine "Yellow" polishing cloths for light polishing of jewelry, flatware, and my old boats and cars.
In summary, you can use silver-guard cloth to keep brass from getting scratched, but it will not keep it from turning dull or tarnishing over time.

All of this said, I also believe that lined covers, as discussed in this thread, will protect our brass against dust and scratches and slow the tarnishing process due to reduced air exposure, but chemically, there may not be any additional benefit from an anti-tarnish lining.

I am not trying to disparage anyone or their product, but I think that setting reasonable expectations makes for happier owners.

Keep crankin',
Eric
