A visit with the Dauntless Geezer

Karen and I are just back from a road trip. On Monday the 16th we were driving from Oklahoma City up toward Wichita to visit relatives and realized we were in the neighborhood of Winfield, KS where Steve Jelf is staying and thought "Why not. Worst he can do is slam the door in our face."

Well, he greeted us with a smile and we had a good visit for an hour or so. We talked about T Models and other matters of importance. Steve is anxious to get back home so he can fully assess the damage to his dinged-up roadster and plans to do so soon. I will say, he seems hale and hearty and we used to say, "Able to eat hay and pull a plow."

We didn't get a Jelfie this trip but thought that some of you guys would like to hear this. Bob

I was just studying the Dauntless Geezer's website this weekend, perusing through the various areas.

Kudos to you for taking full advantage of being in an enviable position. I am sure Steve Jelf appreciated getting to jaw over the Model T for a while with another fan. Happy to hear Steve is looking forward to getting back home and continuing with his projects.

I told Steve last we spoke he is a roll model for an active and productive retirement. The challenge is following his example not just reading about it.

The old man is still able to operate a keyboard and a mouse, so I can get in here and post an update. I don't expect I'll ever live on the farm by myself anymore, but I will go down there occasionally for specific things. One of those things is dealing with the remains of the 1915 runabout, and that has to wait for good weather. I expect in May it will be OK to have the shop doors wide open for several hours at a time. That should give me time to clear some inside space, bring in the carcass, and dig in to see what's left. That will take more than a single session.

Meanwhile my apartment behind the old folks' home is good enough for me. Here I can do some reading and spend too much time playing online. Currently the reading is Doris Kearns Goodwin's Team of Rivals, which tells the story of how we were lucky to have the greatest American come along when he did. Lincoln didn't see political opponents as personal enemies to be punished. He realized that Seward, Chase, Bates, etc. were capable people, and he appointed them to his cabinet to help him govern. This detailed account in the words of the participants reveals the president as the wisest and smartest individual of them all.

How am I getting along? Well, when I run into something I'm used to doing for myself but can no longer handle, it's really annoying. A good antidote is going over to the dining room and seeing all the walkers and wheel chairs. Compared to a lot of other old people, I'm doing pretty well. It's time now to hike over to the pharmacy and pick up a prescription.

Waiting to get it inside and dig in to see that's left.
