Interesting problem solving

Post by Mark Osterman » Tue Aug 06, 2019 8:29 pm

Had a very difficult time getting enough fuel to my U&J carburetor for full performance. I tweaked the float, in increased the diameter of fuel line from 1/4 to 5/16.” I also installed a steering column air / gas choke adjuster to allow more fuel suction which showed a real improvement in speed. But decided this carburetor should perform better without that so decided I might have an intake leak.

So I removed the manifolds. I had a warped exhaust manifold that was preventing the intake manifold from sealing completely. So, found an NOS exhaust manifold on a trip to Lang’s last week. Cleaned everything and sprayed copper gasket sealer on the copper rings. Installed the rings and steel glands and the NOS manifold slipped so easily into place.

Was a little hard to start at first and I replaced the vintage Champion X plugs for a set of Autolite. Had to fiddle with how much gas to give for starting but once going I drove it around for an hour. This time when I pulled the choke the engine didn’t accelerate as before; it stalled which confirmed my thoughts that it was not getting enough fuel due to the intake leak. Nice to be back on the road again. Just need to adjust the carburetor needle a little and retighten the manifold nuts.
