PARTS OF MODEL T FORDS USED FOR OTHER THINGS,

Post by Richard G » Sat May 02, 2020 1:13 pm

GOING BACK 50---60- YEARS THERE WAS A GUY I KNEW UP IN GAYSVILL VERMONT, HE BUILT A WIND POWER BATTERY CHARGER OUT OF A MODEL T BLOCK, HE CUT IT DOWN AND MOUNTED IT UP SIDE DOWN ON A PLAT FORM BOLTED TO THE BRAKE DRUM OF HALF THE T REAR END, ,IT HAD A THREE BLADE PROP , USED THE MAG TO CHARGE THE BATTERY'S, THIS GETUP WORKED REAL GOOD FOR YEARS, HE USED THE HEAD LIGHTS FOR OUT SIDE, HIS HOME WAS ON A GOOD HILL AND A BROOK RUN BY, HE HAD EVERY THING NEEDED TO LIVE , PLENTY OF VENISON, ECT. I HAVE A 1925 T ENGINE THAT'S USED FOR A SAW RIG, IVE SEEN THE FRAME AND RUNNING GEAR USED FOR A HAY TRAILER, I WORKED ONE TIME ON A T ENGINE THAT WAS USED ON A ROPE TOW FOR PULLING SKIERS UP THE HILL. WHAT HAVEN'T THESE FORD PARTS BEEN USED FOR, NOW SOME OF THESE PARTS ARE GOING BACK INTO CARS, THEY WERE CALLED THE UNIVERSAL CAR, THAT FIT IT TO A --T--.

In the years not too long after the Model T "era", magazines like Popular Mechanics and Mechanics Illustrated, quite often had articles about practical uses for parts from Model T's, or, practical things that could be built that utilized Model T parts. Especially during the depression I think, because of two reasons; people had no money to buy a lot of the things that could be built by the "home mechanic" such as tools and such, and the other reason that there were so many Model T's laying around in fields, farms, etc, just rusting away. They were considered to be "old-fashioned" junk, even if some of them could be fairly easily and inexpensively put back into running condition.

Our local bakery had a bread loaf slicing machine that used a T crankshaft and 4 connecting rods to provide the up and down motion to the slicing knives.

I raise a few cattle. About 25 years ago I had a electric fence charger bit the dust. There was an old guy near Flintville who repaired chargers out in his barn. I delivered my charger to him driving my '26 Pickup. The first thing he did was take me over to his personal charger that he used on his own fence. Inside a homemade wooden box was a 12v battery driving a small electric motor-------which turned rotated an old roller in a Ford timer--------which in turn actuated a Ford wooden coil--------which in turn shocked the pee-rooney out of any cow that got up against his barbed wire fence. :P

A hose reel can be made out of an old T or A wheel when it is damaged beyond use.

I have a haymow rope pulley made from a Hayes 30 x 3 1/2 demountable rim. The frame is made from wood with a hook to hang it in the barn with and has a large manila rope to lift the hay with. The rim is in excellent condition, but is missing a lug. I originally bought it at a flea market for the rim (easy fix), but I decided it was just too cool to take apart. Dave

Both of my Grand Daddy's were old time Country Blacksmiths, we never did have electricity, so they flame welded, and it worked as good or better than an electric machine. I think everything on both places were made out of old T parts, both used T axles to make Spurs, they swore by the steel in them. T's were still fairly new then, so axles were reused, and sometimes hard to come by. They had a particular ring to them, I still have a pair my Paternal Grand Daddy made me, as new looking as ever. Trailers were all made out of T's, easy to do,just strip one down, take the engine out, make a simple hitch and you were in business.

Find a Lejay Electric manual. You will see a lot of T parts repurposed in one of them.

Back when I first became enamored of the Model T Ford, before the demise of the forty acre farm (circa 1962) it seemed nearly every farmstead in our corner of southeast Idaho had one of these one-row spud diggers in their bone pile of discarded machinery. Now, like the small farm, they have disappeared along with the abundance of rust and really good junk we used to find in that period. This one has been elevated to relic status, adorning the owner’s mailbox location.

I’m pretty sure there’s an interesting story about them I never bothered to learn. There were so many of them it suggests they were the product of a cottage industry rather than the result of individual tinkerers. They could be a reasonable source of a few internal parts if your rear axle needed attention. I’d guess their working heyday would have run from the mid-1930s through the end of WW II, maybe as late as the mid-1950s. They were horse-drawn implements converted to tractor PTO power by virtue of the adapted Model T drive train. Most (like this one) were mated to three speed transmissions from Chevrolets or other small cars.
