The telephone #, being a 2L-5N format (2 letter, denoting the local exchange, 5 number the specific routing & customer #) came in use in the 30's, was ubiquitous Nationwide by the 40's, and died out by the early 60's.
34 years with AT&T...I personally oversaw 7 major network evolutions... the rate of evolution is mind boggling.
We had a saying, when asked to describe how any new network technology works, we simply said FM.... borrowing from and adulterating a term from analog/digital radio operating on FM (Frequency Modulation), was reused as everything being FM (F'ing Magic).
The technology changes thru the decades were relevant to capacity, and sheer amount of end connections required.
The mind boggling explosive rate of demand was exemplified best when the industry was forced to reconfigure, on an all hands on deck emergency short fused development window, from IPV4 to IPV6 simply because the world was close to running out of addresses!! For perspective IPV4 had 4.3 billion addresses. Compare that to a local exchange of old that maxed out at 100,000 for the 2L-5N platform. With every technology upgrade, we used to say, "now we'll never run out of capacity". HA!! That fact makes me wonder when we'll eat our words again....IPV6 has 3.4 x10 to the power of 38 addresses!!!!!
Some people bemoan the reality of technology eliminating jobs, but sometimes the reality is more it HAS to! An example being, if we still had to create connections on a switch board, there are not enough humans on the planet to handle todays traffic volume.
