The telephone #, being a 2L-5N format (2 letter, denoting the local exchange, 5 number the specific routing & customer #) came in use in the 30's, was ubiquitous Nationwide by the 40's, and died out by the early 60's.
34 years with AT&T...I personally oversaw 7 major network evolutions... the rate of evolution is mind boggling.
We had a saying, when asked to describe how any new network technology works, we simply said FM.... borrowing from and adulterating a term from analog/digital radio operating on FM (Frequency Modulation), was reused as everything being FM (F'ing Magic)
