The telephone #, being a 2L-5N format (2 letter, denoting the local exchange, 5 number the specific routing & customer #) came in use in the 30's, was ubiquitous Nationwide by the 40's, and died out by the early 60's.
34 years with AT&T...I personally oversaw 7 major network evolutions... the rate of evolution is mind boggling.
We had a saying, when asked to describe how any new network technology works, we simply said FM.... borrowing from and adulterating a term from analog/digital radio operating on FM (Frequency Modulation), was reused as everything being FM (F'ing Magic).

The mind boggling explosive rate of demand was exemplified best when the industry was forced to reconfigure, on an all hands on deck emergency short fused development window, from IPV4 to IPV6 simply because the world was close to running out of addresses!!
